INTRODUCTORY.

The publishers herewith present to the public the tenth vol- ume of the Fort Wayne City Directory. The large amount of time and care bestowed on a directory is known only to the publishers, and they tender this volume with the knowledge that no expense or labor has been spared and feel assured that it will be found as correct as it is possible for a work of this class to be made.

As usual, the first pages of the work are devoted to miscel- laneous information, which comprises a street guide, list of the city and county officers, churches, schools, banks, incor- , porated institutions, secret and benevolent societies, etc. This is followed by an alphabetical list of names in Fort Wayne which shows a total of . 13,360 names. By using the usual multiple of 3, the city has a population of 40,080, an increase of 2,280 over 1885. Pages 441 to 472 are devoted to the classification of all persons engaged in business. This is followed by the Monroeville and New Haven Directory, they being the most important towns in the county outside of Fort Wayne. The County Directory is an important addition to the work. It is arranged alphabetically by townships and postoffices and contains the names of all farmers in the county, giving number of section in which their land is located, num- ber of acres owned and the assessed valuation of same. This will be found a valuable acquisition to the directory. The county matter will be found only in books which were con- tracted for to contain both the city and county. In conclu- sion, the publishers tender thanks to the patrons who have shown their appreciation of the work by their cordial support and encouragement.
