Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1883, by R. L. POLK & Co., in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D. C.
INTRODUCTORY.
In issuing to the public the eleventh volume of the Fort Wayne City and Allen County Directory, the publishers have every confidence that the work will be appreciated more than ever before, no effort having been spared that experience and painstaking care could contribute to make it complete and reliable. Many new and valuable additions and improvements have been made, and all the information contained has been recently procured and corrected to the latest date. The first sixty pages are devoted to useful miscellaneous information relating to the city and county in general, which comprise a street guide, list of city and county officers, fire department, churches, schools, banks, railroads, justices of the peace, incorporated institutions, miscellaneous institu- tions and societies, newspapers, secret and benevolent societies, terms of court, etc., etc. Succeeding these are 467 pages containing an alpha- betically arranged directory of all the inhabitants of the city, followed by 42 pages containing a list of all persons engaged in business, classi- fied under their respective occupations.
Immediately succeeding this are 55 pages devoted to an alphabetical list and classified business directory of all persons in the towns of Ant- werp, O, Auburn, Bluffton, Columbia City, Decatur, Huntington, Ken- dallville, Monroeville and New Haven, Ind. The remaining pages con- tain name, number of section, number of acres, assessed valuation of same, name of township and postoffice address of all farmers and postal address of all storekeepers, lawyers, physicians, clergymen, etc, in Allen county.
The publishers have much pleasure in being able to congratulate the citizens of Ft Wayne on a very marked increase in population during the past year. The '87 book contained 13,360 names, which, with the multiplier of three persons to one directory name (the lowest used in any city), gave a population of 40,080, in 1887. This edition contains 15,003 names, showing a population of 45,009, an increase of 4,929. This fact should be highly gratifying to the people of Fort Wayne, and is a tribute to the energy and enterprise of its citizens.
The publishers desire to express to the business and professional men of Fort Wayne their thanks for the liberal support accorded the work, and in conclusion would say that in the future they will be as unremitting in their efforts to please as in the past.
