INTRODUCTORY.
"THE fourteenth volume of the FORT WAYNE AND ALLEN COUNTY DIRECTORY is submitted to a discriminating public by the pub. lishers, with a feeling of confidence that their efforts to make each succeeding volume the best have been successful. Devoting their atten- tion exclusively to the publication of works of this class, their practical experience and facilities enable them to perform the work promptly and accurately, and a comparison with any other directory will prove that in typographical appearance the work is not inferior to similar publications in any of the large cities.
The first 58 pages are devoted to useful miscellaneous information relating to the city and county in general, comprising a street and avenue guide, ward boundaries, lists of city and county officers, fire and police departments, federal officers, courts, banks, building, loan and savings associations, cemeteries, churches, incorporated institutions, libraries, miscellaneous institutions and societies, newspapers, parks, postoffice, public buildings and halls, public schools, miscellaneous schools, secret and benevolent societies, etc. Succeeding these are 492 pages containing an alphabetically arranged directory of all the inhab- itants of the city, followed by 54 pages containing a list of all persons engaged in business or the professions, classified under their respective callings. The remaining pages contain name, number of section, num- ber of acres, assessed valuation of same, name of township and post- office address of all farmers, etc., in Allen County. This compilation shows that there are 17,982 adult names represented in Fort Wayne, which, with the multiplier of 3 persons to each directory name -the lowest used in any city in the United States - gives a present popula- tion of 53,946.
This volume goes forth among its patrons with the appreciation and thanks of its publishers for the support and encouragement accorded the enterprise. The fifteenth volume will be issued in due time.
