INTRODUCTORY.
1
The sixteenth edition of R. L. Polk & Co.'s FORT WAYNE CITY AND ALLEN COUNTY DIRECTORY is introduced with the. assurance that it will be found even more reliable than any former issue. The greatest care has been exercised to obtain accurate information, and the experi- ence of a quarter of a century in directory making insures completeness and the fulfillment of the wants of directory patrons in this locality, such as could only be acquired by a thorough system and full knowledge of the city, its institutions and its people.
The work contains 890 pages, of which the first 58 are devoted to miscellaneous information relating to the city and county in general, giving a complete street and avenue guide, the executive, police, educa- tional and fire departments of the city, county officers, justices of the peace in Allen county (with postoffice address), lists of banks, building, joan and savings associations, churches, hospitals, fire alarm stations, federal officers, incorporated institutions, labor organizations, libraries, miscellaneous societies, newspapers, postoffice, public halls and build- ings, public and miscellaneous schools and colleges, secret and benevo- lent societies, etc. Succeeding these, are 574 pages containing an alphabetically-arranged directory of all the inhabitants of the city, fol- lowed by a list of all persons engaged in business or the professions, classified under their respective callings, occupying 89 pages. Imme- diately succeeding this, is a descriptive sketch and alphabetically- arranged list of all persons in the towns of Monroeville and New Haven. The remaining pages contain name, number of acres, assessed valuation of same, name of township and postoffice.address of all farmers, etc., in Allen county.
The Fort Wayne City Directory shows 15,904 names, which, with the usual multiplier of three persons to one directory name, gives a total population of 47,712. It is the purpose of the publishers that the directory shall keep pace with the population and resources of the city and county it represents, and with each succeeding issue improvements and additions will be made.
