INTRODUCTORY.
In presenting this, the seventeenth volume of the Fort Wayne City and Allen County Directory, we note with pleasure the increase in population, notwithstanding the depression during the last two years. The Directory of 1894 contained 15,904 names ; this contains 16,154 names, multiplied by three, shows the total population to be 48,462.
The Directory, in accuracy, is as nearly perfect as the most unceasing vigilance could make it. The publication of a directory is a work of great difficulty and labor of which the public have no conception, because if they had we should suppose that many of our merchants, store keepers and others who use it a great deal during the year, besides having their busi- ness represented from year to year in both the alphabetical and classified portion of the Directory without any cost to them, would give up the prac- tice of borrowing and purchase a copy for their own use. The taking of names was completed about the 1st of March, and it is hoped that anyone who has changed his business location or residence since that date whose name, business or profession is not properly inserted will not censure the publishers, as communications appeared in the daily papers requesting such to send in their addresses for correction, the frequency of removal: rendering it impossible for the publishers to make a correct directory with out such assistance. To find a name you must know how to spell it. It i: not uncommon for members of the same family to spell their names differ ently, preserving the pronunction-a few instances as follows: Baar Bahr, Barr, Beyer; Maher, Maier, Mayer, Meier, Meyer, Mier, Myer Schaefer, Schafer, Shafer, Shaffer. We have in our office a librar containing directories of all the principal cities of the United States fo the free use of our patrons and strangers visiting our city. In addition t the benefits which our citizens derive from this valuable library, our "Exchange System," which places the Fort Wayne City Directory in all directory libraries throughout the country, serves as an excellent advertise- ment for a prosperous city, for no other publication can convey such an idea of a city, its growth, its people, with their trades and professions; its schools, churches, societies, banks and railroads, and all the various institutions and organizations.
The wide circulation of the Directory enables capitalists and business men in every locality to communicate with our citizens and to note the progress and improvements the Directory annually records. Attention is directed to the city map, corrected up to date, and street guide attached thereto indicating by letter and number where each street may easily be found. We have at great expense and labor acquired this information, which we feel no hesitation in placing before you. In our County list for 1895 we make a new feature, giving the name of every male over 21 years of age. With accurate Post Office address, we found many of our patrons who regard the acreage and valuation following each farmers's name, as unimportant, they only requiring the accurate address.
We extend our thanks to the patrons of the Directory for their con- tinued confidence and support. THE PUBLISHERS.
