tered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1896. by R. L. POLK & Co., in the office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D. C.

INTRODUCTORY.

The eighteenth edition of the Fort Wayne City and Allen County Directory is presented to the public with the belief that the results obtained must reflect credit upon the efforts and thorough system of the publishers, and we can, with confidence, assert that it is the most complete of any of its series.

The Directory, in accuracy, is as nearly perfect as the most unceasing vigilance could make it. The publication of a directory is a work of great difficulty and labor of which the public have no conception, because if they had we should suppose that many of our merchants, store keepers and others who use it a great deal during the year, besides having their business represented from year to year in both the al- phabetical and classified portion of the Directory without any cost to them, would give up the practice of borrowing and purchase a copy for their own use. The taking of names was completed about the Ist of March, and it is hoped that anyone who has changed his business location or residence since that date whose name, business or profession is not properly inserted will not censure the publishers, as com- munications appeared in the daily papers requesting such to send in their addresses for correction, the frequency of removals rendering it impossible for the publishers to make a correct directory without such assistance. To find a name you must know how to spell it. It is not uncommon for members of the same family to spell their names differently, preserving the pronunciation-a few instances as follows: Baar, Bahr, Barr, Beyer; Maher, Maier, Mayer, Meier, Meyer, Mier, Myer; Schaefer, Schafer, Shafer, Shaffer. We have in our office a library containing directories of all the principal cities of the United States for the free use of our patrons and strangers visiting our city. In addition to the benefits which our citizens derive from this valuable library, our "Exchange System," which places the Fort Wayne City Directory in all directory libraries throughout the country, serves as an excellent advertisement for a prosperous city, for no other publication can convey such an idea of a city, its growth, its people, with their trades and professions: its schools, churches, societies, banks and railroads, and all the various institutions and organizations.

The wide circulation of the Directory enables capitalists

and business men in every locality to communicate with our citizens and to note the progress and improvements the Di- rectory annually records. Attention is directed to the city map, corrected up to date, and street guide attached thereto indicating by letter and number where each street may easily be found.

The alphabetically arranged Directory of all the in- habitants of the town consists of 629 pages, followed by 95 pages comprising a list of all persons engaged in business, classified under their respective callings. This is supple- mented by 160 pages giving name, section, number of acres, assessed value of same, township and postoffice address of all farmers in Allen County so far as could be procured, the names and present addresses of persons who have removed from the city during the past year, as also the full name, age and date of demise of those who have died within that time are given in the general alphabetical directory.

This edition exhibits the fact that the City of Fort Wayne has a steady growth as a place of importance in the State of Indiana. The Fort Wayne City portion contains 16,250 names, exclusive of firms, removals, or deaths, which with the usual multiplier of three persons to one directory name gives a total population of 48,750.

In conclusion we extend our thanks to the patrons of the Directory for their continued confidence and support.
