VOLUME XIX.

R. L. Polk & Co., Publishers,

33 BASS BLOCK, FORT WAYNE.

Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1897, by R. L. POLK & Co., in the office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D. C.

INTRODUCTORY.

The nineteenth edition of the Fort Wayne City and Allen County Directory is presented to the public with the assurance that it will equal former editions in completeness and accuracy.

POPULATION.

This volume contains 16,416 names. By using a mul- tiple of 3, a population of 49,248 is shown. This multiple is used to include males under `twenty years of age, and females having no employment, whose names are not in- cluded in this publication. In figuring the population of the city at 49,248 it is believed that a fair and just estimate is given, and shows that Fort Wayne has a steady growth as a place of importance in the State of Indiana.

RENUMBERING OF HOUSES.

The City Council has now under consideration the re- numbering of houses on the decimal system, 100 to the block of the usual length, a system which is in vogue in nearly all the large cities, and one that for simplicity and correctness cannot be excelled.

The number would indicate the exact number of blocks distant from the base or dividing line of the city.

CITY MAP.

At the foot of the revised edition of the City Map, also presented by the publishers with this volume, will be found all street changes which have been made in accordance with city ordinance. These changes were made after our revised map was printed.

Changes found in a City Directory from year to year surely indicate the life and activity of its inhabitants, and the statistics which our columns from time to time present are basis on which to estimate the city's growth and pros- perity. As the city increases in population demands for more commodious offices centrally located increase, and as real estate in the heart of the city becomes more valuable old buildings are torn down to make place for new ones, more modern in style and more commodious in arrange- ment. Each of these buildings has its numerous tenants, and the proportion who move yearly can only be appre- ciated by comparing one of our editions with its previous one. These changes make the Directory an absolute neces- sitv in every store and business man's office.

In conclusion the publishers desire to thank their pa- trons for continued support, and the public generally for courtesy extended to their agents in collecting the required data. Neither effort nor expense has been spared to make the work accurate and reliable.
