FORT WAYNE CITY AND

ALLEN COUNTY

DIRECTORY 1898.

CONTAINING

An Alphabetically Arranged List of Business Firms and 1 Private Citizens in Fort Wayne-A Miscellaneous Directory of City and County Officers, Public and Private Schools, Churches, Banks, Incor-" porated Institutions, Secret and Benevo- lent Societies, Etc., Etc .- A Classi- fied List of all Trades, Profes- sions and Pursuits-A Di- rectory of Allen County.

SOLD ONLY BY SUBSCRIPTION.

VOLUME .XX.

R. L. Polk & Co, Publishers, 33 BASS BLOCK, FORT WAYNE.

Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1898, by R. L. POLK & Co., in the office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D. C.

INTRODUCTORY.

We take much pleasure in being able to-day to issue to our patrons the twentieth edition of Fort Wayne and Al- len County Directory. We have worked early and late, long and diligently, to make this volume excel in accuracy and finish all its predecessors. How well we have succeeded we will leave to our patrons to judge.

We follow in Fort Wayne the rule adopted in the hun- dreds of other cities that we publish i. e., we do not stop at the city limits, or any imaginary limit. We think it would be unjust to our patrons, many of whom live beyond the corporate limits, if we stopped our canvass at that point. We have this year covered the same territory as in all for- mer years. Our canvass shows this year all told an in- crease over last year of 288 names, which would make our present population 50,112 actual count (not approximate).

Every subscriber will receive a copy of our revised map free, and will note the changes made in the names of streets In following our map our patrons will avoid the confusion they might otherwise encounter in looking for streets, the names of which have been changed to those of former streets. We trust that before our next publication the or- dinance passed by the City Council, authorizing the renum- bering of the houses, will be enforced. By the decimal system of numbering, one hundred numbers being allotted to each square, a person can easily determine the exact location of any given number, and it will be most advan- tageous to all our citizens to have the changes effected as soon as possible.

In conclusion, we most sincerely thank our entire list of subscription and advertising patrons for their support to our efforts to furnish them a thoroughly reliable and ac- curate book, and assure them that without such liberal sup- port such a publication would be wholly impossible.
