INTRODUCTORY.

The present volume of the Fort Wayne City and Allen County Directory, herewith presented, is its twenty-first edi- tion, and will be found. upon examination, practically complete in every essential, that goes to make a first-class work of its kind. The City Directory is without ex- ception the book most frequently consulted by the majority of citizens of every class, and hence is the most useful. It is as indispensable in all cities of considerable size as elec- tric lighting, street railways or newspapers. By the Direc- tory a close estimate of the population of a city can be made, and the name, home and business occupation of the citizens recorded. It has also a valuable historical charac- ter, making its yearly volume useful for the historian and the attorney.

As legal evidence it is in frequent use, and is a recog- nized authority in the Courts, and in tracing the where- abouts of missing people it is a book of common use. Notwithstanding the business depression throughout the country, we are pleased to note the continued prosperity of our city. The increase of population is evidenced by the increase of names in the Directory, and the following esti- mate of population may be of interest to all. This volume contains 16,844 names. and by using a multiple of 3 a popu- lation of 50.532 is shown. This multiple is used to repre- sent women and children not included in the Directory.

We beg to call special notice to our "Too Late" list of names, commencing on page 8, which consists of the names of people who have moved to our city or changed their resi- dence since the city was canvassed. We continue to get all changes up to the time of going to press and many names not traceable in the alphabetical arrangement of this work will be found in this list. The usual care, for which the pub- lishers have acquired a national reputation, has been de- voted to the compilation .printing and binding, all of which has been done in this city.

With sincere thanks to all who have patronized the work, the press and the public in general, we are,

Respectfully,

R. L. POLK & CO ..
