VOLUME XXII.

R. L. Polk & Co., Publishers, 33 BASS BLOCK, FORT WAYNE.

Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1900, by R. L. POLK & Co., in the office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D. C.

r

INTRODUCTORY.

Fresh and unsoiled we place in the hands of our patrons the Fort Wayne City Directory for 1900, while the volume of 1899, bearing marks of much usage, will be thrown aside. as a thing that has had its day.

'There is probably no better medium than the Directory for showing the advance of the city from year to year in population, in improvement both public and private and in business. We believe that the increase of population for the year ending April 30th, 1900, which is based upon the number of names contained in the Directory is a fairly cor- rect index to Fort Wayne's progress and development. In this issue there are by actual count 20,823 names, which by using the multiple of 2 1-2, (which is in most cities 2 3-4) shows a population of 52,057, an increase of 1, 525 over last year. The United States census to be taken this month will, probably, show a much less population due to the superficial manner in which the government census 1s usually taken and to the fact that the numerators are not permitted to include the name of any person working and boarding within the limits of the city and having families residing elsewhere. To illustrate take railway employes who work in Ft Wayne, spend most of their time in Fort Wayne but who have families living just outside the city or at the terminus of their division. Such persons will not be included in the United States enumeration of Fort Wayne. It should be understood that the canvass for the Fort Wayne Directory is not confined to the corporate limits of the city but embraces all suburbs adjacent to the city as well as householders of Spy Run, which is to all in- tents and purposes a part of Fort Wayne. In population, however, numbers are not of as much account as quality. There is no "submerged tenth" in Fort Wayne. Its paup- erism is the smallest of any city of its size in the country.

This is because it has nothing to attract the pauperism of other countries, as have the larger cities. Furthermore it is safe to say that in no other city of the size of Fort Wayne do so many people own or have an interest in the houses in which they live.

Each issue of the Directory increases the obligation of the publishers to the people of Fort Wayne for their liberal patronage and for their courtesy to those who represent them in the preparation of the work.

For the patronage and co-operation of years the pub- lishers extend their sincere thanks.

R. L. POLK & SON.
