An Alphabetically Arranged List of Business Firms and Private Citizens in Fort Wayne-A Miscellaneous Directory of City and County Officers, Public and Private Schools, Churches, Banks, Incor- porated Institutions, Secret and Benevo- lent Societies, Etc., Etc .- A Classi- fied List of all Trades, Profes- sions and Pursuits-A Di- rectory of Allen County.

VOLUME XXIII.
R. L. Polk & Co., Publishers. 33 BASS BLOCK, FORT WAYNE.
Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1901, by R. L, POLK & Co., in the office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D. C.
· PUBLISHERS'Y
INTRODUCTORY.
The publishers of the Fort Wayne City Directory pre- sent to its patrons the annual issue for the first year of the twentieth century.
In a broader sense than most will imagine the Directory is the history of Fort Wayne. If the historian had no other data he could write the commercial and industrial develop- ment of the city.
The Directory of 1901 contains 23,392 names, com- pared with 20,823 in 1900, a gain of 2,569. The method used by all Directory publishers is to multiply each name by 2 3-4. On account of the large number of young people in Fort Wayne employed at knitting mills, waist factories, etc., we multiply this year by 2 1-4, which gives us a population of 52,632. The United States census gives Fort Wayne a population considerably under the estimate of the Directory, nevertheless we are confident that our estimate is nearer the population of Fort Wayne to-day than is the count of the census bureau.
The pages devoted to the alphabetical part of the Directory contain 731, 74 pages more than the Directory of last year. While the county directory, to which we have devoted considerable care and time, contains 67 extra pages, we not only give a list of farmers this year, but every per- son in the townships which the free rural delivery of mails embraces.
We wish to draw attention to our list of "Too Lates," which contains a number of names of persons who have changed their residence or come into the city since the earlier forms of the Directory were printed.
Thanking our patrons for their liberal patronage and the courtesy with which they have treated our employes while engaged in the work of collecting information, we are
Respectfully,
R. L. POLK & CO.
