INTRODUCTORY.
The Publishers of the Fort Wayne City Directory, present to its patrons the twenty-ninth edition compiled by them. During all these years, the Directory, like the City has been improving and growing in size and popularity.
The City has progressed from a village in the Com- mercial, Manufacturing and Social Metropolis of North- ern Indiana.
The Directory has kept apace with the City, until now it is equal in every respect to the largest Metropolitan Directories.
It is used by all classes and conditions of people, in every locality of the City and by every stranger who comes within its limits every day in the year.
The use of the City Directory is becoming more gen- eral every year and its great importance as a business fac- tor is now generally recognized. It is regarded as highly conducive to the development and extension of commerce on account of the easy means of communication which it provides for the people.
One who uses his Directory will extend his acquaint- ance, and his information about the people and the City and its government and organizations and he will be more successful than one who depends upon his own resources for such information.
The Fort Wayne City Directory may be found in the directory libraries of all the principal cities of the United States and Canada, where it is consulted by those who seek information concerning its citizens and mercantile houses and all the various institutions that make up a city.
The compilers of the Directory have taken infinite pains and labor to obtain and insert the new numbers, that the city ordinance demands, shall be placed upon all residence's and places of business. This has been a work of great dif- ficulty, owing to the fact that the numbers, where changed after the canvass of the city had been completed, and also owing to the slowness with which so many responded to the order, that they place the new numbers upon their prop- erty.
Even now there are numerous houses on which the old number is still displayed, and in many instances house
7
FORT WAYNE DIRECTORY.
numbers have been changed since the earlier forms of the Directory were printed. But the publishers feel confident that their patrons and the public generally, will recognize this fact and concede that no effort has been spared to make the work, as accurate in every department as possible.
In all instances where the new numbers could not be obtained the old number is in parenthesis.
The Directory of 1902 contains 27,060 names, a gain of 3,668 compared with 23,392 in 1901. By using a lower multiple than any other directory in the United States (2), this gives Fort Wayne a population of 54,120.
It may be of interest to some to know that the City Directory of Fort Wayne 1861-1862 contained 3,200 names and the population was estimated at 14,500, a multiple of nearly 5 being used. The only advertisers who were then and now in active business in Fort Wayne were A. Hat- tersley and A. C. Beaver, both of whom are prominent ad- vertisers in the Directory of 1902.
There are 73 additional pages in the alphabetical por- tion of the Directory. A very careful and actual count of the names has been made and we are convinced that we are giving a very conservative estimate of the population of the city. With such a record as the 28 volumes of the Directory which have preceded this have made of the de- velopment of a great city, from a country town, the pub- lishers in the twenty-ninth issue which they present to its patrons, feel warranted in predicting the steady growth of one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
At the same time that the publishers feel a pardonable pride in giving the public so valuable a book, they grate- fully recognize their increased obligation to the people of Fort Wayne for their liberal patronage, and for their cour- tesy to those who have represented them in the preparation of the Directory.
