T
INTRODUCTORY.
The thirty-first volume of the Fort Wayne City Direc- tory is herewith presented to its patrons and the public.
The issue of the City Directory is of considerable im- portance to the community for it is not merely a catalogue of names and addresses, it is the City's annual statement of growth and progress.
Every merchant and manufacturer appreciates the value of an annual inventory and trial balance, and the govern- ment recognizes the efficacy of such statistics as the Direc- tory presents, for its decennial census costing millions of «dollars, compiles the same data: except that it does not pub- lish the details, giving merely the tabulated results.
The material progress of this municipality, its people and its institutions during the past year is highly encourag- ing. Enormous growth in population and wealth is easily apparent in every section of the city, and this evident pros- perity is confirmed by the statistics complied from a care- full canvass of the city, all the items of which will be found in their proper places in this volume.
The Directory for 1904 contains 28,145, which multi- plied by two, shows a population of 56,290. By comparison with the population statistics of the last United States census and the several directory estimates, it has been shown that a multiple of two and one-half is as nearly correct as possible. Were the compilers of the Fort Wayne Directory to use a mulliple of two and one-quarter, which would still be lower than that used by any other directory published, we could claim a population of 63,326. We however desire to present our claim, with an accuracy which is conservative and cannot be challenged by the outside world, and there- fore as the names in the City Directory are counted, not estimated, we may confidently claim a population of 56,290. Notwithstanding 'he large increase in cost, and the number of new buildings, vacant property in any part of the city, is hard to find. The demand for all sorts of homes is con- : stantly increasing. This condition a prominent real estate "man claims, has been brought about by a large influx of strangers from the country and from other cities.
What is being done in the way of manufacturing in Fort Wayne is always more manifest to an observing out-

sider than to a person who lives in the midst of it. Com- mercial travellers can testify to the truth of this statement, one of them recently remarked Fort Wayne's commercial growth has become the subject of wide comment. The city is attracting far more attention from the outside business world than she has ever done before.
If the people would, but more generally adopt, the fol- lowing homely but wholesome maxim and then practice what they preach, the evidence of the material growth here briefly excited might be many times multiplied, that maxim is Speak well of the town you live in, spend your money at home.
We desire to thank our many patrons for their con- tinued support and the public generally for the courteous treatment extended our canvassors.

DIRECTORY
BORROWERS
We receive many complaints from our patrons to the effect that they are bothered so much by BORROWERS. These parties are not the private citizens nor the stranger in the city, who steps in, looks at the Directory and goes out, but merchants, business and professional men, who need a Directory every day of the year, yet who are too close-fisted to buy one.
These same individuals are the ones that borrow your Directory "just for a minute," which, in the majority of cases, means a day or perhaps a week, unless you remem- her that they have it and send for it.
These same borrowers will tell the Directory can- vasser that he has "no use for a Directory." that he "knows everybody," and, vice versa, "everybody knows him."
