MERICAN
INTRODUCTORY.
The thirty-second volume of the Fort Wayne city direc- tory is nearly completed and will soon be issued to pub- lic.
In the preparation of this volume the publishers have made every possible effort to reach the highest degree of accuracy that is possible to be obtained.
The responsibilities of making an accurate directory de- pend equally as much upon the public or citizens of the city as it does upon the publishers. It matter's not how thorough and efficient the force of employers used in obtaining the in- formation for a directory may be unless the citizens and business community generally give their assistance in the matter of furnishing the necessary data, it is impossible to make the work as complete as the nature of the publication dęmands.
Among business men and those to whom the accuracy of the directory is of vast importance, we regret to say there are a large number of instances where we are not permitted to visit the employes at their place of business, nor will they take the trouble to furnish us with reliable lists. In many instances when lists are furnished, they are merely the names as they appear on a pay roll, regardless whether they are ac- curately spelled or not. In resident districts servants, who are in no ways qualified to give the information, are sent to answer the canvasser's call, hence the result, names are spelled wrong and many omissions occur. The publishers are not supposed to know the names of every resident of the city and be able to detect an omission. If the questions asked by the canvasser were properly answered there would be few omissions of names from the directory.
In boarding and rooming houses, the proprietors are, as a rule, very indifferent in this matter and will not go to the trouble to furnish a list of their boarders and tenants.
The publishers of directories make every possible effort to overcome these hindrances and where they fail the re- sponsibility should not be wholly charged to them.

FORT WAYNE DIRECTORY.
There are many firms who courteously make it a special duty to prepare annually a list of their employes for this purpose. This work is entrusted to persons in charge of de- partments and the information is accurately given. If this plan were adopted by all firms the work of preparing a directory would be greatly facilitated.
There is another difficulty experienced in hunting for names in a directory. To know how to find a name it is nec- essary to know how it is spelled. In many instances the sound in pronouncing a name does not indicate how it should be spelled. Cross references to similar names are freely printed for the assistance of readers because the spelling of names by their owners is far from uniform.
The city of Fort Wayne is placed among the important cities of the country. There is no published data by which a city can better exhibit to the world its recources than the pages of the city directory.
There are 30,284 names contained in this issue of the ' Fort Wayne directory. In calculating the population upon the basis of names in the directory, the multiple of two is used. This estimate will show that there is represented in the directory a population of 60,568. , This takes in more territory than is contained in the city proper, but it is so closely identified with the city that it becomes a necessity to embrace it in the directory. We find that by comparison with other city directories our multiple is very low, 2 I-2. 2 3-4 and 3 being used by most publishers.
Were we to use the multiple of 2 1-4 a population of 68,504 would result. We beg to draw the attention of our subscribers and the public in general to the Allen county directory, which contains a complete list of all the people residing in Allen county and those residing on rural routes also a description of Rural Routes on Page 32.
To all those, who by their patronage or courtesy in furnishing information, have helped to make the book what it is, the publishers return their sincere thanks.
