PUBLISHERSK

INTRODUCTORY. 1. 1

The thirty-third annual edition of the City Directory, with such improvements as have been suggested during the past year, is herewith presented to the public with full confidence in its merits and its value as a reliable work of reference. Regarding Fort Wayne its citizens do not need to be told of its advantages, for none fail to appreciate them.

That Fort Wayne is growing in population and wealth is indicated by the increased numbers of busy, prosperous people met with in stores, offices and public places. That the city is growing at a wonderful rate is evidenced by the fact of the large number of new houses and flats that have been erected during the past year. In all directions in the suburbs and new additions to the city, we find com- fortable homes are being built. It is next to impossible to rent a house in Fort Wayne, the boarding houses are over- flowing and the hotels have their capacity tested every week.

An estimate of the population of a city is something necessarily conjoined upon the directory publishers, and the figures given to the public must be veracious and be arrived at by most careful calculations. This volume contains 32,334 individual names, which multiplied by 2, the num- ber which has hitherto been found to correctly embrace the names of women and children not included in the di- rectory, would indicate a total population of 64,668. These figures are veracious and need neither defense nor explana- tion, yet as the population of the city is sometimes ques- tioned, it may be proper to add that any estimate based upon other systems than that employed in the preparation of a city directory, must fall short of its standard of accur- acy because all others are based upon a single enumeration of the inhabitants.

The directory system, on the other hand, provides that all names shall be taken both at business places and resi- dences, and always discloses many names which could not have been obtained by inquiries made at hotel, boarding or rooming houses. Then, too, the directory canvass is not confined to the actual geographical limits of the city, but

.

embraces such adjoining territory as may be for all practi- cal purposes considered a portion of the city itself.

To the business men of Fort Wayne who, by their patronage and courtesy in furnishing information, have helped to make the directory a success the publishers re- turn their sincere thanks.
