1907 VOLUME XXXIV pt. 1
R. L. Polk & Co., Publishers.
33 BASS BLOCK, FORT WAYNE.
Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1907, by R. L. POLK & Co., in the office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington, D. C.
INTRODUCTORY
This is the thirty-fourth annual edition of the Fort Wayne City Directory and it is presented with full confi- dence that it will prove its superiority.
. The increase in the number of names from year to year plainly suggests the extra labor and expense neces- sary in its production, with the increase of population the making of an accurate directory, instead of becoming easier, grows more difficult each year and although each successive edition shows marked improvement over those gone before, the natural result of experience, and newer and better facilities and greater expense. Still the work becomes more intricate and difficult, rather than more simplified. The improvement, therefore, is not the result of accident, but of well directed effort and experience.
POPULATION.
The annual "rounding up" of the population is like the merchants trial balance. It is quite important to know whether the community is growing or decreasing and the directory presents a very accurate census.
There are in this volume 32,159 names exclu- sive of firm names, references and removals.
It is the custom of Directory Publishers, everywhere, to estimate population by multiplying the entire number of names in the directory by the multiple which is believed to represent the number of married women and children not included in the directory canvass. The usual multiple is 21/2.
By using the conservative multiple of two, the pub- lishers of the Fort Wayne Directory are confident that Fort Wayne can justly claim a population of 64,318 In a neighboring city of Indiana the multiple of 212 is used, bringing the population up to 66,222. Were the compilers of the Fort Wayne Directory to use the same method, we should claim a population of 80,397.
The statement in the Publishers introductory an- nouncement in the 1906 edition of the City Directory that Fort Wayne is a progressive city, is corroborated by ex- isting facts.
The year just passed has been one of continued pros- perity. .

FORT WAYNE DIRECTORY.
The upbuilding of the city has gone on uninterrupted- ly, carrying the population well beyond the 64,000 mark. Solidifying existing commercial enterprises and making room for others, both new and prosperous. A large hotel, thoroughly up-to-date in every detail is now an established fact of the near future and modern office buildings equipped with every convenience will undoubted- ly be occupied by the professional men before the publica- tion of the 1908 directory. The increase in population and prosperity, while great is none the less staple and is worthy tribute to the city's civic and commercial activity and has been largely inspired by the untiring efforts of the members of the Commercial Club.
Merchants and manufacturers report great activity during 1906. The price of property in the business dis- trict has advanced materially and some real estate dealers assign as the cause, the activity in local trade.
A good barometer of the activity of a city's industries consists of the postage receipts of its postoffice. The postal revenue at the Fort Wayne Postoffice, ending the fiscal year June 30, 1907, was $215,833.24, the largest in the his- tory of the office, while for the preceding year it was $191,- 632.59.
The clearing house receipts for 1906 were $39,605,- 180.64.

A careful count brought down to April, 1906, shows twelve hundred and thirty-eight financial, industrial and mercantile houses and concerns, actively engaged in busi- ness in the city of Fort Wayne.
The number on December 31, 1905, was twelve hun- dred and fifteen. Upwards of two hundred and forty of these can be properly classed as industrial and manufac- turing houses, employing official, clerical and wage earning forces. Many of these are small concerns, but two hun- dred were of sufficient importance to be recognized by the

R. L. POLK & CO.'s
government department on labor and manufacturing in its compilation on statistics in 1905.
These statistics are the only late complete figures now available, and bring information of great interest and much value.
The two hundred concerns referred to in the manu- facturing class showed in 1905 the following capital invest- ed, $12,981,853 as compared with $8,673,566 in 1900. Five years preceding. Per cent. of increased capital invested 49.7. Officials and clerks 961, as compared with 601 in 1900, gain 59.9 per cent. Salaries and wages paid these forces, $1,012,128 for 1905, $527,858 in 1900, per cent. of gain in five years, 91.7. Wage earners in these concerns number 8,224 in 1905, against 6,519 in 1900, per cent of in- crease in number of those employed for same period 26.2. Wages paid for 1905, $3,919,588, as against $2,626,544 in 1900, per cent. of increase in wage disbursements for same perio., 49.2 Combining the figures of officials, clerks and wage earners by these two hundred industries in 1905 the total annually is 9,189 employes drawing the aggregate sum of $4,931,716.
In 1900, five years preceding, statistics were compiled from one hundred and seventy-eight concerns showing 7,- I20 total number employed, with aggregate salaries and wages of $3,154,402.
The cost of raw materials used in 1905 by these two hundred concerns is reported at 7,545,102 and the value of all products including custom work and repairing is given at $15,129,652. The increase in value of products for 1905 over 1900 is given at 34.3 per cent. The growth and de- velopment of industrial concerns in the city of Fort Wayne for the five years from 1900 to 1905 is considered remark- able in face of the fact that the government statistics show for the state of Indiana 7,128 concerns in 1900 and 7,045 in 1905, a decrease in industrial houses of a trifle over I per cent. Fort Wayne as a manufacturing and distributing centre certainly has reason to be proud of its record, its opportunity was never so good and its achievements in the future will surely eclipse anything in the past.
Thanking our patrons for their continued support.
