INTRODUCTORY

FORT WAYNE - THE CITY

This directory is an annual history and review of the city. He who compares its issues year by year sees the continual advance of Fort Wayne; its steady growth in population; the extent and variety of its business houses, steam and electric railroads and manufacturing interests. Within this book are the names of the vigorous, sturdy men and women of Fort Wayne, who are the creators of her greatness.

This directory is no epitome of the dead past, but a record of the splendid life of an ambitious, growing city, hardly yet conscious of her ever expanding strength. The men and women of Fort Wayne are proud of their city, proud of her achievements as a great and growing manu- facturing and commercial city. They are proud too of her fine schools which prepare her youth to cope with the ever increasing calls of modern civilization. They are proud of the opportunities the city offers for the cultiva- tion of the humanities, the broad catholic spirit of her many churches which accord to all men equal rights and privileges in the attainment of that which satisfies their spiritual needs. They rejoice in the spirit of benevolency and charity abroad in the city, which manifests itself in the liberal maintenance of hospitals and asylums, where the weak, the incapacitated find succour and shelter; in the literary and esthetic spirit which is seen in numerous club and musical organizations. Furthermore the citizens of Fort Wayne have abiding faith in the coming greatness of the city.

The financial depression has scarcely been felt in Fort Wayne as the rapidly subscribed for increased stock in several of her leading manufacturing industries corrobor- ates. Many flourishing institutions are making plans to enlarge their premises, or to build more commodious homes, having outgrown their present occupancies; build- ing is booming and promises to remain so during the entire

year. Miles of new street paving is being contracted for and great municipal improvements are contemplated.

Business is good in all lines of trade .; our people are all occupied; our business streets are filled with hustling people; our residence streets are being filled with new homes and signs of prosperity are visible from all points. "Pushing ahead" aptly characterizes the spirit of progress and tendency to improve, and nothing speaks more em- phatically for what the city is to-day and will be in the future than the confidence the people themselves have in the city wherein they live and have their own.

POPULATION.

Nothing in life remains stationary, everything goes forward or backward. If a city grows, success, prosperity and happiness follows. If it does not grow it will decrease in population and all the elements of hard times will be present. It is therefore of vital importance that a proper census be taken of the city at frequent intervals, and the - directory canvass affords indefinitely the best method, and the statistics which the directory presents annually to the people are like a merchant's trial balance; for its shows clearly and definitely the actual condition of the city, its people and their institutions and the possibilities that the future may offer.

The number of names contained in this book is greater than in any previous issue, and shows as the previous vol- umes have shown, a steady and strong growth in the popu- lation of Fort Wayne. There are 32,544 names, exclusive. of firms, non residents, etc. Using the conservative mul- tiple of two to represent the names of those women and children whose names do not appear in the directory, these figures show a population of 65,544.

Fort Wayne is a progressive, solid, substantial indus- trial center. It is advancing methodically and surely, and is proud of the class of people who make up the popula- tion. In acknowledgement of the liberal patronage be- stowed, and the many courtesies extended in the compila- tion of this work we wish to express our sincere thinks.
