449595 INTRODUCTORY
The history of the growth and development of Fort Wayne during the last forty years and more, is recorded in the volumes of the Fort Wayne Directory, and it is with pardonable pride that the publishers now present the Directory of 1910, for on its pages is found the grati- fying story of continued advancement. The one feature of the city's growth above others, which is always of in- terest is the population.
This volume contains 35,750 names and as experience has shown that there are two inhabitants to each name the present population of Fort Wayne is 71,500. The signi- ficance of these figures, as marking the growth of Fort Wayne, can best be appreciated by comparing with those of former Directories:
The Directory for 1900 contained 20,823 names, which by using a multiple of two and one-half gave a population of 52,057. Using the low multiple of two only in estimating the present population of Fort Wayne, gives us an increase of 19,443 in ten years.
R. L. Polk & Co. have sought to make each issue of - the Fort Wayne Directory more truly a reflection of the city's life. While the primary purpose of this volume is to present an accurate record of the names, residences and places of business of the citizens, yet the scope has been so enlarged that the commercial, the industrial, the social and the moral phases of the city's life are clearly portrayed.
In the Classified Business Directory is to be found the evidence of a well-balanced industrial existence.
The city boasts of a varied line of manufacturers; several new factories were established during the past year, giving employment to thousands of skilled work- men and women.
The lists of wholesale and jobbing houses, retail stores, financial institutions, railroads-steam and elec- tric-these round out a wholesome industrial record.
The miscellaneous pages of churches and religious organizations show also an increase, denoting the moral
development of the city. New school buildings have been erected and musical schools opened, indicating the growth of the city in matters of culture and intellectuality. More acres are included in the city parks, the public service corporations have been required by the growth of the city to enlarge their facilities and extend their pipes and lines. All these and many other evidences of the substan- tial advancement of the city, an to be found in this volume and the citizenship in general is to be congratulated not only upon the present progress and prosperity in evi- dence, but also upon the prospect for even greater civic development in the years to come. The Fort Wayne Directory, has grown as Fort Wayne has grown, and the publishers have enjoyed a generous patronage, of which they are deeply appreciative. There is satisfaction in producing that which makes to the general benefit and convenience of a community and we thank the public generally for the courteous treatment extended to our canvassers. We print a number of extra copies of the Fort Wayne Directory for the purpose of exchanging with all the Directory Publishers of the larger cities. The books are sent at our own expense and placed in all the Direc- tory Libraries of the country.
In exchange we have on file in our Directory Library the directories of the leading cities of the country. This makes a reference library for the use of our patrons, and is a convenience which is utilized by a large number. We are pleased to be able in this way to make an additional return for the patronage bestowed upon the work. At the same time we draw attention to the fact tha we are giving Fort Wayne widespread and effective advertising by placing so complete a mirror of our city as our Direc- tory in a conspicuous position in all the cities of the na- tion.
