INTRODUCTORY
Even if it were possible to write the progress of Fort Wayne one day and to print it the next, the history would not be adequate.
For the forward movement has taken fast hold on the community and every minute marks an advance.
No medium records this history, so nearly up-to-date, as the Fort Wayne City Directory, for perforce, it must fol- low closely to render dependable service to its many patrons.
And in this volume for 1911, the publishers believe the public will find even greater satisfaction than in those , which have preceded.
The census taken by the Government last year gave Fort Wayne a population of 63,996; while the City Direct- ory gave a population of 71,500, which was an accurate count, in no way actuated by unworthy motives to at- tempt to "Pad" the figures, or give the public "Hot Air" and the fact that the supervisor of the government cen- sus had 5,000 names which he was desirous of including in the official count, but was prevented from so doing by higher authority. substantiates our claim. Of necessity the government must enforce rigid restrictions in the census taking.
Our volumes for 1510 and 1911 presents several thou- sand names that were omitted in the census count for Fort Wayne-employees in this city with legal residences at other points, but to all intents and purposes citizens of Fort Wayne, residents of the new additions just outside the city boundaries, but active in the business and social life of the community, and it includes the names of sev- eral thousand people, who have removed to Fort Wayne, since the census count.
The Directory contains 37,724 names which indicates a population of 75.448 for experience shows that there are two inhabitants to each name and this is giving the low- est multiple used by any directory publishers in the coun- try. The compiler of this volume has consulted 50 direct- ories of 1910 and 1911 and finds no other using the mul- tiple of two. The publishers believe that the figures
given are a conservative estimate of the population of this community at the present time. Population is not the only growth in Fort Wayne, however, the pages of this volume present evidence of general civic and commercial advancement, many new industries ore listed-new busi- ness blocks, new apartment houses, new school buildings, new churches -- all mean a progress more important to a municipality than mere numbers of inhabitants.
The general information found herein is varied and · complete, it is only the by product of the Directory to be sure, for the chief purpose is to present accurate lists of names and addresses, careful and painstaking effort has been expended in gathering and classifying information and the publishers desire to express appreciation of the efforts of those who have co-operated with the represen- tatives of the company.
Patrons of this company are invited to make use of the Directory Library maintained at the office 401 Bass block, where the directories of the larger cities will be found, these. directories are received in exchange for the copies of the Fort Wayne Directory, which occupies a place in. similar libraries over the country, giving constant and favorable publicity to Fort Wayne.
