449601 INTRODUCTORY
This is the forty-fourth volume of the Fort Wayne City Directory, compiled by R. L. Polk & Co.
The directory publishers realize that in no publication is accuracy more desirable or necessary than in a city directory, and therefore, the geatest vigilance is used to have the spelling of the names correct, as well as the occupation and address. It is a well-known axiom with directory makers that, "To find a name you must know how it is spelled," and yet, the directory is sometimes blamed because a name cannot be found, when the trouble really is that the name was looked for under the wrong spelling. Names are, of course, sometimes incorrectly spelled in the directory. This is largely unavoidable, and is usually the result of the carelessness or indifference of the person furnishing the information. The city directory is a useful and valuable semi-public utility, absolutely necessary to the commercial, professional, social, political, educational and religious progress of the day. It must of necessity be accurate in order that its authenticity may not be questioned. The publishers recognize this, and are devoting all their energies to the accomplishment of this task. By our duplicate system of securing the names at both places of business and employment and at dwelling, by checking and recanvassing, there is but small chance of anyone being overlooked.
But let it be understood, that the City Directory is a Semi-Public Utility, and as such needs the hearty co- operation and substantial support of all whom it benefits. The publishers take this opportunity to request that all use their influence and power to see that detailed, correct and ready information is given to our agents, to the end that in the future, to even a greater degree than at pres- ent, through the service and satisfaction derived, the ultimate profit and pleasure may be obtained through the consultation and use of the City Directory.
The prime function of the City Directory is to fur- nish a list of all residents of the city, showing their occu- pation, places of business and residence, compiled in strictly alphabetical order for ready reference, but the Fort Wayne City Directory is much more than this. It provides a vast fund of useful information. It has com- plete lists of all lines of business. It is a record of the
MAY 20 1942
commercial, industrial, social, religious, educational and artistic activities of the city, and there is no other publi- cation which is so sure an index of the city's develop- ment and standing.
Arranged in four separate departments, the Fort Wayne Directory is serviceable in that it is comprehen- 'sive and compact. The largest department is the general alphabeical list of names, the last name first, the given name and initials following; if married, the wife's name; business associations or firm employed by ; and last, resi- dence information. The miscellaneous department in front of the work gives full information of the govern- ment of the city, the county, and the state; the streets and avenues; and everything pertaining to the civic work or the work of the society of the people.
The classified list is the third department of the directory, and is a city catalog, showing everything that is made or sold in the city, and every kind of service that is offered. Too much stress cannot be laid upon the con- stant and intelligent use of the Classified and Buyers' Guide departments of the City Directory, which are per- sonal presentations of organizations and the activities carried on by these organizations. They represent a com- plete and comprehensive listing of industrial activities, and should be constantly consulted by every resourceful and energetic citizen as the most economic means of ob- taining the vast supply of service and industrial goods at his command.
The Allen County Farmers' Directory occupies the last department of the book. Following each name are given, first business, second number of section upon which person resides, third number of acres, fourth assessed valuation, sixth postoffice address.
POPULATION
There are 44,250 names in the directory, which, multi- plied by two (the lowest multiple used in any directory in the United States), gives Fort Wayne a population of 88,500, an increase of 1,140 over 1916.
PROGRESSIVE CITIZENS
The effort of American cities to gain in prestige, power and prosperity must primarily be credited to in- dividual initiative, but in the complex character and scope of modern business life the advantage of bringing into
play the concerted force and influence of the many is readily recognized. In every commercial community there is an organization of business and professional men through which is expressed the hope and posibilities for greater things. Their mission and aim is to foster legiti- mate business enterprise and to extend the sphere of com- mercial and social influence. They are imbud with a. spirit of progress and their foremost thought is for the prosperity of the civic community, and their high aims are represented in Fort, Wayne by the members of the Commercial and Rotary Clubs.
This directory has been printed in Fort Wayne by union labor. It reflects the enterprise and industries of Fort Wayne. It stands for Fort Wayne and it should be in possession of every Fort Wayne man who is sufficiently interested in Fort Wayne to want to know all about Fort Wayne.

SOME SUBSTANTIAL STATEMENTS
"Fort Wayne, from which the name of the city is derived, was erected in 1794 by General Anthony Wayne at that point where the St. Mary's and the St. Joseph's unite to form the Maumee river, which flows into Lake Erie at Toledo.
"It had been an Indian trading post for a hundred years previous, its Indian name being 'Kekionga.
"It had been held in earlier times by the French, who built a fort for its protection a short distance west, on the St. Mary's river, and later by the English, who con- structed a fort on the St. Joseph's, a short distance north of the site chosen for 'Fort Wayne.' "
Within its corporate limits it has nine miles of rivers -five of the St. Mary's, two of the St. Joseph's and two of the Maumee. All of these river banks within the city, are owned by the city, and are to be parked and boule- varded.
Fort Wayne has never had a "boom," and it has never stopped growing. Its population in 1840 was 2,050; in 1850, 4,282; in 1860, 10,388; in 1870, 17,718; in 1880, 26,880; in 1890, 35,393; in 1900, 52,057; in 1910, 71,150; in 1911, 75,448; in 1912, 76,320; in 1913, 79,520; in 1914, 82,764; in 1915, 83,250; in 1916, 87,360; in 1917, 88,500.
It has four east and west trunk line railways-the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne and Chicago (Pennsylvania lines), the Wabash, the New York, Chicago and St. Louis (Nickel Plate), and the New York Central Lines. It has two north and south trunk lines-the Grand Rapids and Indi- ana, and the Lake Erie and Western. It is the western terminus of the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton.
It has six miles of interurban railways, with others building and in contemplation. These railways have a direct connection with the great interurban systems of Ohio and Indiana.
It has no slum district. It is a city of homes, the proportion of home owners to its population being greater than in any city of its class in the United States.
It is known as the "Summit City," as its sits upon the crest of the water shed, from whence the waters flow east to the St. Lawrence and west to the Mississippi.
It is on the line of the proposed deep water way known as the Toledo, Fort Wayne and Chicago Trunk Line Barge Canal, which will unite the waters of Lake Michigan and Lake Erie.
It has the best distributed system of parks of any city in the state, twelve in number, with four others now being acquired. When these are secured there will be a park within ten minutes' walk of th home of every citizen in Fort Wayne.
It has a commercial club with a membership of 800, to the members of which the city is indebted for the new Anthony hotel, costing for grounds, buildings and fur- nishings, over $500,000.00.
It has the finest county court house west of the Alle- ghenies, designed by a Fort Wayne architect and built without a dollar of "graft" going into it.
It has four national banks with assets of $22,220,667, four trust companies with over $13,132,168, and four private banks.
It owns its own waterworks with an ample supply of pure deep rock well water, the value of the plant being estimated at $2,000,000.00; the rates are the lowest in the state. There are one hundred and forty-five miles of pipe.
It owns its own electric lighting plant for both city and commercial purposes, valued at $800,000.00, and is already earning a net annual profit over operating ex- penses and renewals of $100,000.00.
It has ninety-eight and four-tenths miles of paved streets, thirty-one and one-half miles being asphalt.
It has the finest public market house in Indiana.
It has over fifty churches; three large public hos- pitals; four fine opera houses; four large photo play houses, and ten smaller ones; nineteen large public school buildings, several with fine playgrounds attached ; three public playgrounds, and many fine parochial schools ; the handsomest Scottish Rite cathedral in the world; a beautiful Masonic Temple, an elegant country club, and a $100,000.00 Young Woman's Christian Association, and has just raised by public subscription over $338,000.00 for a Young Men's Christian Association.
It is one of the best lighted cities in the country, all of its business section being illuminated with five-light ornamental lamp posts, placed seventy-five feet apart on both sides of the street.
It has four daily newspapers, three of these of very wide circulation, covering all of northeastern Indiana and northwestern Ohio.
It has some of the largest manufacturing plants in the United States, among which are the Pennsylvania shops, the General Electric Co, Fort Wayne Works; the Bass Foundry and Machine Works; the Wayne Knitting Mills, the largest full-fashioned hosiery mill in the coun- try, employing 3,000 people; the Packard Piano Com- pany ; the Western Gas Construction Company ; the Bow- ser Oil Tank and Pump Company ; The Wayne Oil Tank & Pump Co; The Van Arnam Mfg Co; the General Electric Lamp Factory, and many others.
The bank clearings for the year 1916 totaled $78,451,639.40.
