INTRODUCTORY
The forty-fifth volume of the Fort Wayne City Di- rectory is herewith presented to its many patrons and the public in general.
It is no small task to produce a Directory of a city the size of Fort Wayne and especially so at this time, yet the publishers of this Directory do not hesitate to . say that, never before has such a state of accuracy been attained in any of the preceding editions as in this one. There will, of course, be some errors, but they have been reduced to a minimum. The Directory has passed through the same period of evolution as the city. They have developed and expanded together and the Fort Wayne of today compares with the small town of a third of a century ago as the present Directory compares with the small book published at that time. The Fort Wayne Directory, like the city it represents, has improved as it developed and is now the most complete and accurate publication of its kind. The Directory is a standard work of reference for all the people in which they are all represented and interested. It is the most accurate and complete record of the people, their occupations, their institutions and their progress. No other work shows so clearly the changes which are continually taking place.
POPULATION
The Directory estimate of the population has been proven so correct, not only in Fort Wayne, but in most of the cities of the United States, that it is the accepted authority and takes preference over any other form of enumeration.
There are in this volume 46,055 names of individuals, which, multiplied by 2 (the most conservative multiple used by any enumerator, indicates a population of 92,110. We were confronted this year with a problem. So many of our boys having left us, for the training camps and foreign service. Were we to omit these boys' names from the Directory we would leave them without any legal place of residence. We have therefore listed them as citizens of Fort Wayne and in all cases where we were able, we have shown their present occupation with the different branches of U. S. service.
The effort of American cities to gain in prestige, power and prosperity must primarily be credited to in- dividual initiative, but in the complex character and scope of modern business, the advantage of bringing into play the concerted force and influence of the many is readily recognized. A voluntary association of men, rather than any one man, becomes the instrument for promotion and guidance.
It reflects the civic and economic aspiration of a community. Thus every city, large and small, has its organization of business and professional men through which is expressed the hope and possibilities for greater things.
The Commercal Club is the logical organization in Fort Wayne.
The activities engaged in by it are in a measure, at least, a suggestive index to the present commercial, in- dustrial and civic tendencies of the community.
It has supplemented individual effort by collective effort in prompting a spirit of progressiveness, in stimu- lating enterprise and growth, in bringing the natural advantages of the city to the highest state of develop- ment and in advancing the civic ideas of the community. It furnishes an organization that brings local men of affairs together, groups their abilities and centralizes their responsibilities to such a degree that they are at present engaged in an effort to change the Commercial Club to a Chamber of Commerce.
Copies of this Directory are placed by us in the Di- rectory Libraries of the principal cities of the country, where it serves as a valuable book of reference for the public and as a lasting advertisement for Fort Wayne and its business interests. R. L. POLK & CO.,

SOME SUBSTANTIAL STATEMENTS
"Fort Wayne, from which the name of the city is derived, was erected in 1794 by General Anthony Wayne at that point where the St. Mary's and the St. Joseph's unite to form the Maumee river, which flows into Lake Erie at Toledo.
"It had been an Indian trading post for a hundred years previous, its Indian name being 'Kekionga.'
"It had been held in earlier times by the French, who built a fort for its protection a short distance west, on the St. Mary's river, and later by the English, who con- structed a fort on the St. Joseph's, a short distance north of the site chosen for 'Fort Wayne.' "
Within its corporate limits it has nine miles of rivers -five of the St. Mary's, two of the St. Joseph's and two of the Maumee. All of these river banks within the city are owned by the city, and are to be parked and boule- varded.
Fort Wayne has never had a "boom," and it has never stopped growing. Its population in 1840 was 2,050; in 1850, 4,282; in 1860, 10,388; in 1870, 17,718; in 1880, 26,880; in 1890, 35,393; in 1900, 52,057; in 1910, 71,500; in 1911, 75,448 ; in 1912, 76,320; in 1913, 79,520; in 1914, 82,764; in 1915, 83,250; in 1916, 87,360; in 1917, 88,500, and in 1918, 92,110.
It has four east and west trunk line railways-the Pittsburgh Fort Wayne and Chicago (Pennsylvania lines), the Wabash, the New York, Chicago and St. Louis (Nickel Plate), and the New York Central Lines. It has two north and south trunk lines-the Grand Rapids and Indiana, and the Lake Erie and Western. It is the west- ern terminus of the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton.
It has six miles of interurban railways, with others building and in contemplation. These railways have a direct connection with the great interurban systems of Ohio and Indiana.
Within a radius of about 200 miles Fort Wayne is about equidistant from her sister cities of Indianapolis, Toledo, Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago and Grand Rapids.
It has no slum district. It is a city of homes, the proportion of home owners to its population being greater than in any city of its class in the United States.
It is known as the "Summit City," as it sits upon the crest of the water shed, from whence the waters flow east to the St. Lawrence and west to the Mississippi.
It is on the line of the proposed deep water way known as the Toledo, Fort Wayne and Chicago Trunk Line Barge Canal, which will unite the waters of Lake Michigan and Lake Erie.
It has the best distributed system of parks of any city in the state, fifteen in number, with one other now being acquired. When these are secured there will be a
park within ten minutes' walk of the home of every citi- zen in Fort Wayne.
It has a commercial club with a membership of 800, to the members of which the city is indebted for the new Anthony hotel, costing for grounds, buildings and fur- nishings, over $500,000.00.
It has the finest county court house west of the Alle- ghenies, designed by a Fort Wayne architect and built without a dollar of "graft" going into it.
It has three national banks with assets of $23,122, 453, three trust companies with over $13,826,541, and three private banks.
It owns its own waterworks with an ample supply of pure deep rock well water, the value of the plant being estimated at $2,000,000.00; the rates are the lowest in the State. There are one hundred and fifty-five miles of pipe.
It owns its own electric lighting plant for both city and commercial purposes, valued at $807,000.00 and is already earning a net annual profit over operating ex- penses and renewals of $50,000.
It has one hundred and fourteen miles of paved streets, fifty-one and one-half miles being asphalt.
It has the finest public market house in Indiana.
It has over fifty churches; three large public hos- pitals; four fine opera houses; three large photo play houses, and eight smaller ones; nineteen large public school buildings; several with fine playgrounds attached, three public playgrounds, and many fine parochial schools; the handsomest Scottish Rite cathedral in the world; a beautiful Masonic Temple, and elegant country club, and a $100,000.00 Young Woman's Christian Asso- ciation and has just raised by public subscription over $338,000.00 for a Young Men's Christian Association.
It is one of the best lighted cities in the country, all of its business section being illuminated with five-light ornamental lamp posts, placed seventy-five feet apart on both sides of the street.
It has three daily newspapers, all of these of very wide circulation, covering all of northeastern Indiana and northwestern Ohio.
It has some of the largest manufacturing plants in the United States, among which are the Pennsylvania shops, the General Electric Co, Fort Wayne Works; the Bass Foundry and Machine Works; the Wayne Knitting Mills, the largest full-fashioned hosiery mill in the coun- try, employing 3,000 people; the Packard Piano Com- pany ; the Western Gas Construction Company ; the Bow- ser Oil Tank and Pump Company; The Wayne Oil Tank & Pumping Co; The Van Arnam Mfg Co; the General Electric Lamp Factory, and many others.
The bank clearings for the year 1917 totaled $76,- 740,232.48.
