INTRODUCTORY

107996

The volume herewith presented constitutes R. L. Polk & Co.'s Fort Wayne Directory for 1920. The publishers have endeavored to produce a volume combining all that is vital in the civic, social and industrial life and activity of the city. A careful enumeration of the citizens and business interests of the city and a compilation of the result by trained employees, assures as correct and reliable a work of its character as is possible to be produced. The publishers have an organization devoted to the publica- tion of directories and their methods and resources are unrivaled.

Their imprint on the hundreds of directories published for cities throughout the country attests the quality and reliability of their product.

Directories are an essenual and indispensable means" of reference, and an index to what is in a city. They portray the community as it really is, and they are the only means whereby its various features can be learned by the general public throughout the country.

The statistics \ Zich follow clearly visualize the civic and industrial interests of the city, and exhibit the im- portance of Fort Wayne as a mercantile center, as an industrial location and as a place of residence.

ADVERTISING FORT WAYNE

A copy of this Directory will be placed in each of the Directory Libraries of the leading cities of both the United States and Canada for the free use of those seeking infor- mation regarding Fort Wayne and its social and business interests. The advantage of this widespread publicity is obvious, for there is nothing that contributes more to the development of a community than a clear exploitation of its advantages and resources as only the Directory can show.

THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

"A Power House of Progress," the Chamber of Con- merce is the medium through which the citizens of Fort Wayne, and especially the business and professional men, are working for the uplift of the city, both from a com- mercial and civic standpoint. The activities of the Cham- ber of Commerce are conducted through bureaus, includ- ing the general and civic bureau, industrial, membership, traffic, transportation and waterways, manufacturers, job- bers, retail merchants, advertising, tourists, rural develop- ment and good roads, legislation and taxation, real estate, insurance and housing and other departments. This or- ganization exists solely for the developmet of the city

MAY 20 1942

and its various enterprises, its members are imbued with a spirit of progress, they give their earnest thought and attention to the city's welfare and its social and commer- cial betterment. The influence of the Chamber for good in the lines of conduct laid down for civic progress is paramount in the community, and citizens naturally look to the Chamber of Commerce whenever questions arise relating to the general interests of the city. Thus Fort Wayne is in line with other important cities in maintain- ing and supporting the organization. The Chamber solicits correspondence with investors, merchants, work- ingmen and homeseekers, to whom full information will be furnished.

THE POPULATION OF FORT WAYNE

is announced as 91,600. Unusual care has been taken this year to arrive at an accurate finding of the city's population. By actual count of the names contained in alphagetical pages of the directory the total amounts to 45,800. The names of all married women as they appear in parenthesis following the husband's total 18,329. The total number of school children in 1919 were 20,933 and children under school age, together with members of religious orders in Fort Wayne whose names do not appear in directory will easily supply the 6,538 names to complete the 91,600 population to which Fort Wayne is honestly entitled.

SOME SUBSTANTIAL STATEMENTS

Fort Wayne, from which the name of the city is derived, was erected in 1794 by General Anthony Wayne at that point where the St. Mary's and the St. Joseph's unite to form the Maumee river, which flows into Lake Erie at Toledo.

It had been an Indian trading post for a hundred years previous, its Indian name being "Kekionga."

It had been held in earlier times by the French, who built a fort for its protection a short distance west, on the. St. Mary's river, and later by the English, who con- structed a fort on the St. Joseph's, a short distance north of the site chosen for "Fort Wayne."

Within its corporate limits it has nine miles of rivers- five of the St. Mary's, two of the St. Joseph's and two of the Maumee. All of these river banks within the city are owned by the city, and are to be parked and boule- varded.

Fort Wayne has never had a "boom," and it has never stopped growing. Its population in 1840 was 2,050; in 1850, 4.282; in 1860, 10,388; in 1870, 17,718; in 1880, 26,880; in 1890, 35,393; in 1900, 52,057; in 1910, 71,500; and in 1920, 91,600.

It has four east and west trunk line railways-the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago (Pennsylvania lines), the Wabash, the New York, Chicago and St. Louis (Nickel Plate), and the New York Central lines. It has two north and south trunk lines-the Grand Rapids and Indiana and the Lake Erie and Western.

It has six miles of interurban railways, with others building and in contemplation. These railways have a direct connection with the great interurban systems of Ohio and Indiana.

Within a radius of about 200 miles Fort Wayne is about equidistant from her sister cities of Indianapolis, Toledo, Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago and Grand Rapids.

It has no slum district. It is a city of homes, the pro- portion of home owners to its population being greater than in any city of its class in the United States.

It is known as the "Summit City," as it sits upon the crest of the watershed whence the waters flow east to the St. Lawrence and west to the Mississippi.

It is on the line of the proposed deep waterway known as the Toledo, Fort Wayne and Chicago Trunk Line Barge Canal, which will unite the waters of Lake Michigan and Lake Erie.

It has the best distributed system of parks of any city in the state, fifteen in number, covering three hundred and twenty acres of land, with one other now being acquired. When these are secured there will be a park within ten minutes' walk of the home of every citizen in Fort Wayne.

It has a Chamber of Commerce with a membership of 1,400, to the members of which the city is indebted for the new Anthony Hotel, costing for grounds, buildings and furnishings over $500,000.00.

It has the finest court house west of the Alleghenies, designed by a Fort Wayne architect and built without a dollar of "graft" going into it.

It has three national banks and one state bank with assets of $27,881,904, six trust companies with assets of $19,721,222.

It owns its own waterworks with an ample supply of pure deep rock well waterfi the value of the plant being estimated at $1,343,463.00; the rates are the lowest in the State. There are one hundred and sixty-three miles of pipe.

It owns its own electric lighting plant for both city and commercial purposes, valued at $912,857.00, and is already earning a net annual profit over operating ex- penses and renewals of $67,590.

It has one hundred and thirty-two miles of paved streets, ninety-four miles being asphalt; seven and one- half miles of paved streets; one hundred and fifty-three and one-half milees of cement sidewalks, and one hundred and thirty-four miles of sewers.

It has the finest public market house in Indiana.

. It has over fifty churches, three large public hospitals, four fine opera houses, three large photoplay houses and eight smaller ones, nineteen large public school buildings (several with fine playgrounds attached), three public playgrounds and many fine parochial schools, the hand- somest Scottish Rite cathedral in the world, a beautiful Masonic Temple, an elegant country club, a $100,000.00 Young Woman's Christian Association and a $338,000.00 Young Men's Christian Association.

It is oneof the best lighted cities in the country, all of its business section being illuminated with five-light ornamental lamp posts, placed seventy-five feet apart on both sides of the street.

It has three daily newspapers, all of these of very wide circulation, covering all of northeastern Indiana and northwestern Ohio.

It has some of the largest manufacturing plants in the United States, among which are the Pennsylvania shops, the General Electric Co, Fort Wayne Works; the Bass Foundry and Machine Works; the Wayne Knitting Mills, the largest full-fashioned hosiery mill in the country; the Packard Piano Company; the Western Gas Construction Company; the Bowser Oil Tank and Pump Company; the Wayne Oil Tank and Pump Co .; the Van Arnam Mfg. Co .; the General Electric Lamp Factory, the International Har- vester Company, the Fort Wayne Tire and Rubber Mfg. Company and many others.

The bank clearings for the year 1919 totaled

$88,058,000.00.
