INTRODUCTION
AND GENERAL INDEX
R. L. POLK & CO., publishers of more than 750 city, county, state and national Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1954 edition of the Hammond City Directory, which also includes Calumet City, Ill., and Munster and Whiting, Ind.
Confidence in the continued growth of Hammond's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be main- tained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mir- ror truly reflecting Hammond to the world.
The enviable position occupied by R. L. POLK & CO. 'S Directories in the estimation of the public throughout the country, has been established by ren- dering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and hav- ing had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Hammond Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.
Four Major Departments (Each department beginning with Page 1)
The four major departments are arranged in the following order :-
I. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the first major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Hammond and vicinity, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation.
II. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVE- NUE GUIDE, on pink paper is the second major department. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the designation of homes and places of business having telephones.
III. THE BUYERS' GUIDE, the third major department, printed on golden- rod paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Hammond and vicinity. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference ad- vertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like Hammond, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvi- ous. Generalappreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
IV. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the fourth major depart- ment, printed on white paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns of the whole community in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerousinterests of the community. The Directory is the com- mon intermediary between buyer and seller. VIII
INTRODUCTION
The unusually favorable location of Hammond at the tip of Lake Michigan, in the center of population, at the waterway terminus of all directions, and with unequaled railway distribution, makes its future growth inevitable. No indus- trial location in the U. S. surpasses it.
Government
Hammond is governed by a city council form of government. The incum- bent administration is headed by Mayor Vernon C. Anderson, a Republican.
The police and fire departments operate on a civil-service basis. The heads of these departments having been in office for years, is conclusive evidence of the high efficiency of these protective agencies.
The police department is equipped with a two-way radio system through which the possibility of crime has been greatly reduced.
Both the police and fire departments have gained national recognition be - cause of the low annual fire loss and because of the very high standard of law enforcement.
Taxation
The law of the State of Indiana establishes a rate of $2 for each $100 assessed valuation as the maximum tax levy to cover all taxing units, except for emer- gency expenditures. This undoubtedly is very beneficial in keeping the tax rate on a low level.
The general attitude of officials in making assessments on real and personal property has been reasonable to industry. All assessments are subject to re- view by the State Tax Board.
There is a state gross income tax of 2 of 1 per cent on retail sales, 1 per cent on individual incomes, and 1/4 of 1 per cent on manufactured goods. Also there is a state soldiers' bonus tax of 1/8 of 1 per cent on retail sales, 1/4 of 1 per cent on individual incomes, and 1/4 of 1 per cent on manufactured goods. There is no state sales tax in Indiana, and no occupational tax.
There is a tax ranging from $3 to $150 per year on retail stores. There is also an intangible tax of 25¢ for each $100.
Transportation
Transportation facilities in Hammond offer direct or inter-connected facil- ities with all parts of the U. S. The city is accessible by railroad, electric railroad, state and federal highways, bus and truck lines, waterways and air lines.
RAILWAYS-Hammond is serviced by ten railway lines; three belt lines. The ten trunk railway lines are: Baltimore & Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio; Chicago & Erie; Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville; Michigan Central; New York Central; New York, Chicago & St. Louis; Pennsylvania; Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis; Wabash.
