TO THE PUBLIC.

The work of compiling the first Directory of a county is indeed an arduous one. Especially is this the case where the cities and towns of the county have increased their population and importance by folds in the space of a few years.

The natural advantages such as Blackford County gives to enterprise and business activity, could have no other effect than the rapid and permanent growth of its cities. The great gas and oil fields which lie in its boundaries are the acme of attraction to the manufacturing world.

To Hartford City no encomiums need be paid. Her stan- dard is widely known, and her thriving and sagacious business men read aright her future. Public substantial improvements of all kinds evidence their faith. The construction of paved streets, of a sewerage and water works system, the building of an electric street car line, the location of factories and the erection of business blocks and residences in all parts of the city.

In this Book we have endeavored by diligence and pains- taking to attain a high degree of perfection. Errors, however, will creep in, but we feel they will be few and unimportant.

We desire to thank the citizens of Blackford County for their liberal patronage and kind assistance, and we hope that our work will meet with their approval.

Respectfully, THE COLUMBIA DIRECTORY CO.

Home Office 17 & 19 West 8th St., Anderson, Indiana.

Directory Borrowers.

Many are the complaints from those who patronize this valuable enterprise that they are bored to death by borrowers. Not the stranger or private citizen who steps into the office, looks at the Directory and goes out, but merchants and busi- ness men who continually need it for reference, yet are too close fisted to buy one, and who will tell a Directory canvassers he has no use for one, "he knows.everybody" and vice versa; everybody knows him, "to well perhaps" these are the in- dividuals who carry off your directory "just for a few minutes" which generally means a FEW DAYS, and when you get it back some one else comes with the same drawl "please lend me your directory for a few minutes" and you wont see it for a week. We therefore kindly say

DONT LOAN YOUR DIRECTORY

You have bought it for your own special use and you can get no good from it while out of your possession.
