PREFACE.

We present to our numerous patrons our Second Annual City Directory of Indian- apolis, with a consciousness that no effort has been spared to insure the fullest completeness of the information herein contained. We are confident there has never been a more thorough and systematic canvass of the city made.

The Business Directory represents the business and manufacturing interests more correctly than has ever been before represented by such a medium. The City Guide furnishes much useful information to both citizen and stranger. The difficulty of compiling a City Directory can hardly be understood, and is not easily explained, yet we believe that the Directory for 1873 is more nearly correct than any of its prede- cessors. We have endeavored, and we think successfully, to obviate several difficul- ties attending former canvasses. The book itself is the best evidence of the improve- ment effected, though we do not claim absolute exactness. The present issue contains 21,490 names, against 19,360 in 1872 ; and on the basis of three persons to each name, gives a population of fully 65,000 persons, bearing out our anticipations concerning the growth of the city. The Directory contains a great amount of information concerning the Public, Religious, Charitable and Private Institutions of the city, which makes it a valuable present record, as well as historical authority.

Every person should have at his place of business, or at his house a Directory, not only as a daily convenience, but also as a valuable record of local history. An examina- ation of the book will disclose its permanent value.

Our thanks are due to our numerous patrons for their liberal support and respect- fully solicit a continuance of the same.

Respectfully

THE PUBLISHERS.
