NOT FOR IA DAYS BUT FOR
A Few of the Peculiar Merits of
Brown's Rotary Shuttle Sewing Machine Are Briefly as Follows:
1st. Brown's Rotary Shuttle Sewing Machine is a double thread lock stitch shuttle machine.
2d. The shuttle is rotary in its motion. No dead points, no stopping and starting, and no twisting or untwisting the thread.
3d. When the machine is in the act of making or tightening the stitch, the two threads, i. e., the needle and shuttle threads, are in a straight line, and not at right angles with the cloth plate, which is the case in all other shuttle machines, and which creates an extra friction. Again, the peculiar operation of the machine enables it to make the stitch with less than half the power of any other shuttle machine.
4th. As to its simplicity compared with other machines: Other machines contain in the construction of the machine proper, exclusive of the table, stand and other appurten- ances, from 136 to 300 pieces, while Brown's Rotary contains about 64, and less joints than any other with four times the wearing surface at each joint, consequently many times as durable as any other.
5th. It lays the thread alike on both sides of the goods, and brings the lock in the center of work, be it thick or thin, every stitch being made the same length without re- gard to the speed of the machine.
6th. The shuttle moving mechan- ism will not wear out of time so as to skip stitches, which is a very pro- lific cause of stitch dropping in many other machines.
7th. The length of the stitch can be changed more readily than in any other machine.
8th. In most machines an accidental turning of the machine backwards results in breaking the needle or thread, or both, while Brown's Rotary can be run backward with impunity and without fear of breaking thread or needles, or in any way disarranging or injuring the machine in the least particular. No good reason can be assigned why a needle in this machine should not last for years.
9th. This machine has a device by which it can be changed for thick or thin goods by simply moving a lever which device is covered by patents, (as well as all the other points), which no other company has a right to use.
Finally. We claim for Brown's Botary Shuttle that it will do the best work on a wide range of material with half the power and less noise, and double the amount of work in a given time, greater durability, less liability to disarrangement than any other machine in the world. For the proof of all the above, we ask examination, trial, and any test desired. We believe there ie no defect in other sewing machines that is not obviated in this.
All letters should be addressed to the company.

1358752 PREFACE.
It is not deemed necessary to make many prefatory remarks in presenting to the Citizens the Fifth Annual issue of " SWARTZ & TEDROWE'S INDIANAPOLIS CITY DIREC- TORY." They, the citizens, have generaly become conversant with it, so much so that it may be said with propriety, that all use it.
In presenting this, the fifth edition of the Indianapolis Directory, to our patrons, and the public Generally, we request that in consideration of the many difficulties and inconveniences attending a work of this description in reference to obtaining correct information, spelling of names, etc., etc., we will merit at least some indul- gence, especially from our patrons, who have so kindly given us all the information in their power, and for which we would feel ungratefull were we not to acknowledge it, if any errors do occur. In refference to the compilation, punctuation and typo- graphical errors, it requires a scholar of nice discrimination, critical habits, and ap- proved experience, as well as a great amount of patience to revise and correct: we do not say that our work is perfect in every particular, but we do claim to not have failed on our part to obtain the most accurate information, and especially in some- cases under the most trying circumstances; we also claim, and are proud to confess it, that we have been patronized by a majority of the most prominent and lead- ing firms as advertizers and patrons of the work, and whose advertisements deter- mine, in a measure, their business responsibility, especially the most prominent ones, to all of which we would direct especial attention.
The present Volume contains (30,144,) Thirty Thousand one Hundred and Forty- Four names, showing an increase since our last issue of (4,904) Four Thousand Nine Hundred and Four, and on the basis of (3}) three and one-half persons to a name, making the population of the city over One Hundred and Five Thousand, and showing an increase in the population of the city of over Twenty Thou- sand persons. It is true there has been some territory annexed to the city since our former issue which will in some respects account for the increase, but the most part has been in the city proper. There was over two thousand new dwelling houses erected in 1874, and to-day there is no more vacant houses in the city than there was one year ago, and this is among one of the greatest inducements that we can offer to manufacturers and business men to locate here. Coal, wood, stone of the best material abound in the State, and are within easy distance of the city, and as great railroad facilities for the transportation of the same as any in the world, and a good market for produce of all kinds.
The classified Business Directory will be found a great help to those seeking the different pursuits of business. The Street Directory is compiled on an entire new plan, and will be found very advantageous to the work.
The Church Directory is complete and is daily growing into favor. We want to say a few words to the many persons we have to deal with. The elaborate manner in which many desire their names and professions inserted is a serious and growing evil with which we have to contend. In the future non-subscribers will be inserted so as to occupy the least space in which a proper direction can be given. Those who wish such extended as well as numerous notices of their business, no
24
doubt all intended for the information and benefit of the Public, are respectfully informed that the Directory contains an Advertising Department in which the Publishers have no objection to the insertion of long stories.
The apparent success which has attended the efforts of those who have labored to establish Directories, for the convenience and benefit of the public, as well as their own, has led many to suppose that it is only necessary to announce a book and call it a Directory on some extended scale, to gull the public, and then try a new town. For the past year there has been scarcely a month in which some of these Ephemer- als have not been offered to the public, and we may add, that there has also been as often as every one or two years since the commencement of this publication, enterprising individuals to be found, who reproduce portions of the information in an improved form.
After acknowledging the liberal spirit of those who have sustained us in establish_ ing the work, we have only to remark to fault finders, that the double the receipts of the Directory can be beneficially paid out in improving it. The subscription is four dollars per annum, and we trust enough of those who now freely use it without pay- ing anything towards supporting it, will be found ready to enable us another year to do this. Our thanks are due to our numerous partons for their liberal support, and we respectfully solicit a continuance of the same in our succeeding issues.
Respectfully,
THE PUBLISHERS.
