The objects of the Association are :

First. The advancement of the Directory business and the im- provement of Directories by the interchange of ideas and the ex- change of experienced employes.

Second. To provide protection to the public against fraudulent advertising schemes which operate under the name of Directories, and to drive unprincipled promoters of the same out of the business.

Third. To provide permanent and profitable employment to competent, industrious and honest Directory canvassers and com- pilers.

Fourth. For the mutual protection and advancement of the established and prospective interests of all who may become mem- bers, by personal advice and assistance of members as may be mutually satisfactory, desirable or advisable, and by such other means as may, from time to time, be shown to be wise, proper and lawful.

We take pleasure in the fact that the number of names listed in this directory shows a large increase over those in our directory of 1913.

The increase in the number of names of course signifies a proportionate increase in the population of Indianapolis.

There are 110,102 names listed in this volume, a gain of 3,328 as compared with the volume of 1913.

It has been demonstrated that a fair and conservative estimate of the popu- lation is formed by multiplying the number of names so listed by 21/2.

By following this method it is shown that the estimated population of Indian- apolis is 275,255.

And this is a gain of 8,320 as compared with the estimate of the preceding year.

Care is taken, in ascertaining the number of names listed, to avoid duplication.

In connection with the figures as to the population it should be borne in mind that Indianapolis by reason of its many conventions has, in addition to this fixed population, a large transient population during the greater part of the year.

It is not alone in population that Indianapolis has gone forward in the past year. The new buildings that have been erected; the new business enterprises that have been established; the commercial and industrial prosperity evident; the many im- provements along various lines that have been effected-all these tend to show the progress that the city has made.

And it has been progress of a substantial kind-not due to any campaign of ex- pansion, but because of the many advantages, natural and acquired, that Indian- apolis enjoys.

The contents of this volume include a carefully collected and compiled alpha- betical list of citizens, industrial and commercial enterprises; federal, state, county and city officials ; churches; schools; office buildings and apartment houses; the various literary, patriotic, fraternal, benevolent and other organizations; a classified business directory, and a complete readily understood householders' directory and street guide, which points out the street car line that will take one nearest to any address in the city, and designates each householder in numerical order.

This new feature has been included in the directory at a great expense and we trust it will give the satisfaction desired.

At our offices, 320-324, 8 East Market street, we maintain a directory library containing current copies of directories of all the larger and many of the smaller cities.

This library is for the use of our patrons, and we are pleased to have them avail themselves of it, as well as any other service at our command, at any time.
