A Note to the Boys.

NEVER thought of such a publication as this until after our regimental reunion at Evansville, Indiana. September 21. 1887. on the occasion of the reunion of "The Blue and the Gray." At first I only intended to print a brief account of our own Company reunion. The more I thought about it. the bigger the idea grew. and I finally had to cut it off short or there might have been no end to it. I have only aimed to prepare a little publication that the boys and their boys' boys will cherish as a memory of the war. So far as I have gone. I have tried to be correct and, as my memory serves me. assisted by nothing more than a copy of my old Company mnster-out roll, I have been. There may be errors thongh that the boys will be able to correct. I hope every member of my Company who receives this will immediately set down and write to me and. if they notice any errors, call my atten- tion to them. This is so arranged that the record can be kept up, and I especially desire to be notified at once of the death of every member of the Company-time. place, disease and any other facts that may be of interest. When a member of the Company writes to me I wish he would, at least, make a note of the following facts : State whether he is married or single : if married, his wife's name ; number of children, their names and ages, and other facts touching his circumstances. 1 am certain that I feel a special interest in every one of my old comrades ; shall always be glad to hear from any of them ; will preserve their letters with the most religions care, and will be ready, at any time, to aid them in every reasonable manner possible.

Another thing, boys : I want to make up a picture gallery of Company E. For this purpose, I want to receive at the earliest day practicable a picture of every member of the Company. Now, attend to this at once -- don't neglect or forget it. If I had photographs of every member of

the old Company, as they looked when in the service, money conld not buy them. How careless we are !

Boys, we are getting old, aren't we ? The next ten or twelve years will tell on us. In twenty years-and that don't seein long, does it ?- the living members of Company E can probably be counted on one's fingers ! Think of a reunion twenty years from now ! Who would be there ? A handful of old, grayhaired, tottering men! I imagine they would talk in whispers, and, when they separated. Company E would be wiped off the face of the earth ! But, we can't help it, can we ? Very Truly. Your Friend and Comrade. J. V. ADMIRE.

(00) REES YOUNG served as Sergeant from enrollment to Sept. 24, 1862.

(pp) JOSEPH DUNN, reported as a deserter, was an ignorant boy who joined the company October 1, 1863. I have an indistinct recollection about his case. It runs in my mind that his horse gave out while the company was on the march and that he was abandoned-no one caring anything about him on account of his worthlessness. I bave often wondered whether he was treated exactly fair or not !

(qq) ELISHA SHERRY was carried on the company rolls as a deserter from November 1, 1863. There seems to be good reason to doubt whether this was just or not, as be has never since been heard from. He was not a strong man -- but rather feeble. That, at least, is my recollection.

(IT) DE WITT C. WHITE-"Clint" he was commonly called-is reported to have deserted at Lexington, Ky., March 1, 1565. That was after the war was practically over. Hle had been rather more than an average soldier when on active duty with the company. He was also a man of personal pride and intelli- gence. I do not now recall the facts about his case-but I have an indistinct impression that there was some mistake about it. I, at least, hope so, and also hope that it has been corrected if it was a mistake.

(ss) DANIEL A. BOHANAN served as Corporal from enrollment to Sep- tember 24, 1562.

Our Service.

I have no accurate data at hand from which to give even a fair abbrevia- tion of our service. Our first years' service was done in what was known as southwestern Kentucky, embracing that part of the state in the vicinity of Owensboro, Madisonville, Morganfield and Henderson-the latter being Col. Foster's headquarters, who was in command, most of the time, of the military district. The different companies of the regiment were distributed at various points in this district. Company " E" was located for several months at Hen- derson, doing provost and guard duty. The regiment was mounted early in 1863 and was organized especially for scouting service, pursuing, capturing, and breaking up the " guerillas " with which that part of the state was overrun. Company " E " was stationed at Madisonville after the regiment was mounted. During this period the service was hard and dangerous, but without any noted battles. John Morgan's great raid through Kentucky, southern Indiana and Ohio, occurred during this time and most of the companies of our regiment engaged in the pursuit to a greater or less extent.
