INTRODUCTORY.

The publisher presents herewith, to the Citizens of New Albany and Jeffersonville, a City Directory of the two cities. Great pains have been taken to record every name, and to make the information full and accurate. If you know how to spell the name correctly you are looking for, we feel confident you will find it, if the name sought for was a resident of either city at the time of the canvass; together with the business, place of business, and of residence. Many enquiries from other cities, from Boards of Trade, Commercial Associations, firms, and individual business men are made for the directories of New Albany and Jeffersonville, showing that you are known beyond the banks of the Ohio and beyond the limits of your own State.

We trust your appreciation of this volume will bring you substantial reward in increased growth of population and com- merce. The population of the City of New Albany taken by the directory canvassers is 19,015; that of Jeffersonville 10, 500, a little more than that given by the United States Census Enumerators. We think that the School Census of the two cities taken this year justifies our enumeration, and though not made under official oath we have endeavored to be as industri- ous and accurate as our co-laborers in this particular.

The publisher desires to return his thanks to the press of the two Cities for courtesies extended him and his assistants and the material aid they have given in bringing this enterprise to the favorable notice of the public.

To Mr. Stephen D. Smith and Gervis M. Connelly, the former having charge of the canvass and compilation and the latter his chief assistant, the publisher desires to extend his thanks for faithfulness and industry, and we feel that the good citizens of the two cities will appreciate their immediate labors.
