INTRODUCTORY.
The Second Volume of CARON'S NEW ALBANY AND JEFFERSONVILLE CITY DIRECTORY is presented to the public. The work has been delayed nearly two months by the renumbering of the city of New Albany at a me when the general canvass of the city had been over half made. The volume, however, contains the "new numbers," although what had been already done was thrown aside and an entire recanvass of the territory made at, of course, a large outlay and increased expense. We feel confident, however, that the annoyance of the delay will be over- looked by our patrons in the fact of having an accurate guide to the business places and residences of the people in so short a time after the putting up of the new numbers, The present work contains for the city of New Albany 6,892 names. Multiplying this number by 3 gives a population of 20,692. For the city of Jeffersonville it contains 4,924 names, and by the same method a population of 14,772. .
In connection with using 3 as a multiplier, it is proper to state that figure is small. The majority of cities use 3}, while some use 4. The publisher thinks 3 a very conservative multiplier, especially as there is a very small floating population, and one very closely approaching the enumeration of cities as made by the United States census of 1880. Using the multiplier 3} would give New Albany a population of 24,122 and Jeffersonville 17,234.
Mr. STEPHEN D. SMITH has had immediate charge of the management of the canvass, with the services of Mr. GERVIS W. CONNELLY as chief assistant, the value of whose work will be appreciated by the business public of other cities, and especially by the citizens of the cities by the Falls of the Ohio.

FIRE DEPARTMENT.
The fire department of the City of New Albany has been conducted as a paid department since 1865. As now consti- tuted, with one hook and ladder truck and three reel carriages, it is sustained at an annual expense of about $25,000, which includes the cost of fire plugs. The use of fire-plugs through- out the city has made the service of two steamers useless. Joseph Adams, chief engineer ; office, Market, northwest cor- ner Upper Third.
