INTRODUCTORY.
The publisher takes pleasure in presenting to the citizens the City Direc- tory of New Albany and Jeffersonville, for the year 1884. The great floods of 1882 and 1888, have had a retarding influence on the growth of popula- tion in the two cities as compared with the years 1880 and 1881. It in natural that the literal drowning out of a city for two consecutive years by a great and uncontrollable flood, as in the case of Jeffersonville, should produces diabpartening effect upon its inhabitants, particularly those who are " to the manner born, " owning their own homes and firesides; and upon the merchant and manufacturer who have capital invested in their bond- ness, and different enterprises. Buch disasters will, in a much greater degree serve to keep away the "utranger from entering the gates," and the investment of foreign capital in new enterprises ..
As soon, however, as it is proved that those grent floods are phenomenal and exceptional, and not likely to occur again, even in the memory of the present youngest inhabitant, should helive a century, or as soon as it is known that adequate provision has been made by the building of a levee to keep the flood out of the city, confidence will be restored, and the motivitien of basinem will bring prosperity, and a quickened growth to the two cities. Jeffersonville has suffered far more from the floods than New Albany, and the injuriogs effect upon her population and growth is greater than that of her sister city. The pages of the Jeffersonville Directory contain 4,024 names as against 4,994 in 88, multiplying the number by 8 gives a popula- tion of 18,879, se against 14,772 two years ago. For the city of New Al- biny. 8,014 names appear, showing an increase of 1,122 in the past two yeare, making the population 24,042, an increase of 3,866.
Mr. Stephen D. Smith, has had charge of the cnnvim and' compilation of the work, and his carefalness and accuracy will be evident to all by a dom- sultation of its pages.

As now consti- tated, with one book and ladder truck and three reel carriages, it is sustained at an annual expense of about $25,000, which. includes the cost of fre-plugs.
