INTRODUCTORY ..
IN presenting the seventeenth volume of Caron's Directory of New Albany and Jeffersonville to the public we assure the citizens every energy at our command has been brought into play to insure a complete and accurate publication.
The condition of the two cities today surpasses that of any period of their existence.
New Albany continues to add to her manufacturing establishments 'and is enjoying marked prosperity. Her facilities for transportation are exceptional, having no less than four trunk lines at her door, in addition to the river transportation afforded by the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and thefr tributaries.
New Albany possesses superior educational facilities: her people are intelligent, conservative, and happy.
The population of New Albany is steadily increasing, as will be shown by the present Directory, which contains 12,933 names, as against 12,254 names in the 1905 Directory, an increase of 679 names and 1,358 in popu- lation. The present population of New Albany, according to the 1907 Directory, is 25,866.
Jeffersonville hus made substantial gains since our last issue. The American Car and Foundry Company is working fully one thousand more men than in 1905. The Howard Ship Yards and all the smaller factories' are running full force.
The citizens of Jeffersonville are much elated over their success in keeping out the high water during the last two floods. The city spent $4,000 in raising and reinforcing the embankments along the tracks of the P., C., C. & St. L. R. R. Co. at Clarksville, thereby strengthening the only weak point in the entire wall protecting the city. The citizens claim Jeffersonville was the only city along the Ohio river that did not suffer from the recent floods.
The Jeffersonville Directory contains 8,484 names, an increase of 653 names, and an increase in population of 1,306. The present popula- tion of Jeffersonville, according to the Directory, is 16,968. This is a substantial gain since 1905.
