LOGANSPORT.
------ --
Is situated on the Wabash and Eel rivers at their junction, and is the Justice Seat of Cass County. It was laid out in 1828 and incorporated a city in 1838. No inland town possesses more natural advantages than Logansport. It has an extensive and vahr'le water power in both of the above named rivers ; a canal (the Wabash and Erie) extending from Toledo, O., to Evansville, Ind.
The following railroad lines now in operation afford easy and rapid means of communication. Toledo, Wabash and Western extending from Toledo, O., through to Fort Wayne, Logansport, Lafayette, terminating at St. Louis, Quincy, Hannibal and Keokuk on the Mississippi.
Pittsburg, Cincinnati and St. Louis extends from Chicago through some of the best counties of Indiana to Pittsburg in western Pennsylvania.
Detroit, Ecl River and Indiana connecting with the Detroit, Hillsdale and Indiana forms a short line form Detroit to Logans- port, giving a Choice of Markets where the highest prices can be obtained for the produ tions and manufactures of Logansport and vicinity. The water power is sufficient in volume and fall for the most extensive operations in machinery and milling pur- poses.
Near Hedda Island in the Webech river is the Largest of the improved powers, its available work being 210 horse power. Opposite Biddle island, five 1. 39 nur . by dis joner alone.

truing 35,000 lbs of wool per year ; Samuel Bard's Paper Mill, manufacturing one and one half tons per day ; Hardly, Metagr & Co's Linseed Oil Mill, manufacturing jo, con branch per your; and a Tow and Flax Mill, owned by John O'Neil.
In the Bel river, the upper power at the Got of Tenth Street, is equivalent to 115 hot & power. Below this near the Foot of Bridge Street, a power equivalent to 130 horse power. With the knowledge of these valuable existing powers, capitalists can see that a more available plice for manufacturing cannot be desired.
The limestone quarries underlying portions of the city and found in inexhaustible quantities in the immediate neighborhood furnish the best of material for lime building purposes, such as foundations and for macadamizing. The freestone quarries are also found in abundance, at : easily worked and afford a fine material for general building purposes.
Timber such as Ok, Ash, Walnut and Poplar abound in the neighboring forests.
The surrounding country is rich, and fertile, producing in abundance every variety of grain, vegetable and fruit known to this latitude.
The numerous and excellent educational institutes form a most attractive feature in the character of the city as a residence, suiting both Protestant and Catholic residents, schools of both denominations being in existence where all the lower and higher branches of study are pursued. The principal college amongst these is the Smitlison, one of the finest structures of the kind in the West, and offers instruction in all the higher studies of Eng- lish, and embraces the study of the languages, art, music, etc. It is conducted by an efficient corp of teachers .. It is situated in the northwest corner of the city, and occupies 12 acres of ground. A lithograph of this college will be found opposite page 206.
Among the attractive places of the city we would mention the portrait and landscape photographic rooms of H. G. Fetter. It is situated on the northwest corner of Broadway and Fourth streets. Mr. Fetter excels in his business and cingloyes a number of first class artists, and turns out work whichin point of

cution and finish cannot be sarpassedin the State. It is decid- why the best gallery in the city.
The comfort of the traveling public has been well provided for, there being several good hotels in the city. The Aduns ' ing the principal. This house has been re-opened by Messrs G. E. Adams & Son, has been newly furnished throughout ind thoroughly renovated and refitted. It is located on the south- west corner of Market and Third streets. .
The population of the city has steadily increased during the past 12 years from 4,000 to nearly 9,000. The latter is taken from the last census which usually is less than the actual number, and with the increase since its taking may be estimated at about 15,000.
. Manufacturing is well represented such as Flouring Mills, Machine Shops and Foundries, Lumber Mills, Stave Mills. Wagon, Hub and Spoke, and Tobacco Factories, Woolen Factor- ies, Oil and Paper Mills, etc .. etc.
The general health of the city may be claimed to be excellent, as the census report of 1870 shows the number of deaths to be but one in go for that year.
There are four papers published here, Journal, Pharos, Sun, and Star; the three former weeklies, the latter a daily.
