T "HE City Directory contains upward 10,000 names, including married ladies, deducting the usual 10 per cent. tor firm names there remains 9000; multiplying these figures by 2} (the usual directory method of cal- culating populations) the result shows the population of Logansport and suburbs to be 22,500, which is an increase of about 2000 over canvass made for last directory.

PREFACE.

* *

HIE City Directory has become a neces- sary convenience of our civilization. Large communities constrict and con- tract neighborhoods; vicinity becomes vacancy in the relations of the inhabi- tants to each other. The Directory popu- lates the vacancies, locates persons and unites personality and residence.

Sixty years ago everybody in Logan- sport knew every inhabitant and his status and affairs. Visits, social or otherwise, were made easy as to localities by the universal familiarity of each and all with the situation of the place to be visited, and the metes and cross- cuts leading to it, many of which were cow-paths through the dog-fennel and smartweed, winding around stumps and log- heaps, or amid the perils of the succession of deep holes in em- bryo streets threatening life and limib. On a dark, wet or stormy night these difficulties and dangers, mitigated by the light of a tallow-dip, enclosed in a perforated tin lantern, were cheerfully encountered and butt little regarded. They were really of little consequence compared with the inconvenience we would now suffer, despite the advantages of pavements and floods of · electric liglit, without the aid of the Directory to guide and direct our steps. Thus the progress of civilization con- stantly developes new wants and new supplies thereof.

The first Directory was published in this city about thirty years ago. It was a thin, small book:, containing a few hundreds of names with very im- perfect addresses connected therewith, and little else of value within its covers. At long intervals other and improving similar volumes have follow-

ed this pioneer effort. A little over two years ago the under- signed published a Directory which was almost universally com- mended as the best and most decidedly complete, reliable and valuable of the entire series. The fact that even this most ex- cellent and satisfactory work has become imperfect by the changes time lias wrought in the main elements of its construc- tion, is proof conclusive of the increasing value of the Directory in the progress of our business and social advancement. A new Directory every year will soon be a recognized and approved necessity in our thriving city. This fact, with the twelve thous- and names presented in this volume, are large factors in the in- disputable evidence that Logansport is growing and waxing greater every day in all the features of a sound Ity and reli- able progress and prosperit. .

We recognize the fact that this volume must stand for its approval or criticism upon its merits, but, having taken every available pains and precaution in its pre- paration, we do not fear the ordeal. We have tried to "do the best we could," and is the best ultimate of all human effort.

To the friends and patrons who have aided and supported us in this and former similar efforts, we tender our heartfelt thanks. It is on their part largely a coutri- bution for a general convenience and benefit which very many share with them, without money and without price. We cheer- fully join our patrons in this good work to the whole extent of our reasonable share in it, and shall be more than content if this volume, without regard to its cost to ns, comes up to the high standard of our expectations, and receives the public approval we hope it will receive.
