PREFACE.

IN presenting our patrons and the public with this our second edi- tion of the Indianapolis City Directory, the publishers desire to acknowledge their appreciation of the liberality, enterprise and pub- lic spirit of those gentlemen who have given their support to the undertaking. It is hoped the book may meet their expectations, and it is confidently believed that in fullness, accuracy of detail, and convenience of arrangement this volume far excels all its predeces- sor. Certain it is that no pains have been spared either in the com- pilation or the mechanical department to insure the highest degree of excellence and utility.

-

In the present fluctuating condition of our population, perfection is perhaps impossible, and for such occasional omissions or inaccu- racies as may have crept in, we ask the indulgence of a generous public. To those parties who lacked the courtesy to give their names and the necessary information to our agents of course no explana- tion is necessary. In justice to ourselves we feel compelled to add that we have reason to believe that a few families purposely with- held the true and proper information on account of their apprehen- sion of the approaching enrollment, (mistaking our agents for the enrolling officers,) ; but it is believed that errors and omissions from this cause are compartively few and unimportant, and are confined of course to the lowest class of our population.

To those gentlemen who have assisted us in procuring statistical and other information, and to the gentlemen of the press, we would extend many thanks. Respectfully,

H. H. DODD & CO.
