Dedication.

TO THE HON. DANIEL MACAULEY,

Mayor of the City of Indianapolis :

The Publishers take the liberty of dedicating to you the Fourth Volume of EDWARDS' ANNUAL CITY DIRECTORY of the City of Indian- apolis. Not only as a tribute to your private worth, but as a token of the esteem in which you are held by all who so highly appreciate your exertions, both in time of peace and that of war. As a public benefactor and a civilian your example is well worthy of imitation. Your unrelenting efforts in behalf of the City's good, (in the posi- tion of Mayor,) and the high esteem in which you are held by the citizens of Indianapolis, eminently entitle you to the small con- sideration here bestowed by the publishers of this work.

READ WHAT THE PRESS SAY OF IT:

It presents such a variety and such taste of selections as should make it a favorite everywhere .- Eagle, Union City, Ind.

The workmanship is excellent, and the contents are worthy of so neat a setting .- Commercial, Indianapolis, Ind.

Try it you who love the West and the way she does things. -Register, Eaton, Ohio:

We are very much pleased with the Western Fireside, and wish it abundant success. It looks healthy and its typography will compare favorably with any of the Eastern monthlies. The selections evince considerable taste, while the original articles are all enjoyable .- National Union, Cincinnati, O.

The mechanical part is unexceptionable, being neatly gotten up and nicely printed, a feature in itself that will commend it to the favor of all persons of tasts. The contents are varied and interesting, and adapted to the use and information of its locality, touching on almost all subjects, such as general literature, agri- culture, health, education, temperance, &c. Each number con- tains twenty large three column pages of reading matter, and is offered at the low price of $1.00 per year .- Volunteer, Shelbyville, Indiana.

INTRODUCTORY.

OFFICE OF THE CHARLESS PUBLISHING CO., ST. LOUIS, JUNE 15th, 1869.

In presenting this the fourth volume of Edwards' Annual City Directory of Indianapolis to the patrons of the same, we cannot refrain from tendering our thanks for the liberal manner in which they have seconded our efforts in the prosecution of our labors, believing that they will be appreciated and the correctness of our work readily perceived by all who are daily obliged to refer to its pages; as the continual reference by most of our citizens to a work of this nature necessitates correctness and precision, its usefulness and value is readily felt by all business men, more especially as they have for the past year been misguided by a "skimmed publication."

·

In view of this fact we subject our pages to the closest scrutiny, admitting the fact, however, that slight imperfections will unavoid- ably appear, though the greatest human forethought and precaution may have been exercised. For such slight imperfections we ask the indulgence of a most generous people.

The information has been collected with great care by Reporters who thoroughly understand their business, and no expense nor pains has been spared to give the citizens of Indianapolis a Directory use- ful as a business guide, and one that will reflect credit upon our beau- tiful and prosperous city, and at the same time, reflecting great credit upon its publishers for its mechanical execution.

In this connection we deem it proper to state that it is the intent on the part of the publishers, to make an annual publication here- after, trusting that each succeeding volume will be attended with less difficulties, and that we may be able to merrit the approbation of the patronizing public.

In conclusion, we most heartily return our thanks for the favors and kindness shown us by our friends and patrons.

We are. most respectfully yours, CHARLESS PUBLISHING CO.,

Publishers.
