This invention is practical throughout, and all the materials are at hand in every community to do the work. The same workmen that have been employed in erecting combustible, can build fire-proof buildings for less than ten per cent. additional cost over the present insecure method, and in most cases not to exceed five per cent.

PATENT JAIL.
I have invented and patented "Improvements in the construction of Prisons," which will successfully obviate all necessarily dangerous contact of the jailor with those in charge, and which, in sundry other respects, confers upon the jailor the absolute control over the actions of his prisoners.
In my arrangement the jailor need never come in contact with the prisoner. There is always a grating of iron between the keeper and the confined. They are under his control and at his command all the time, without the risk of direct communication, the danger of which is known to all who have had the charge of prisons.
Eash cell is fastened, and, by a counter movement, opened separately from the other, and any one cell can be locked or unlocked from without the corridor. Rooms for female prisoners, insane persons and hospital patients are made perfectly safe, and together with the residence of sheriff completely fire-proof;
The patents for " Improvements in the construction of Prisons" was granted to EDWIN MAY, October 4, 1859; May 29, 1860; June 28, 1870, and December 27, 1870. Patent of 1859 exten- ded October 4, 1874.
SAW AND FILE-PROOF PRISON GRATING. PATENDED MAY 9, 1871.
The advantage of this grating is the perfect security offered over the old method of common iron window grates; however large the bars, they could be easily sawed off, and the larger the bars the more obstruction to light and ventilation. This grating can be used for prison doors and cor- ridor partitions. For further particulars,

INTRODUCTORY.
The Twenty-third Volume of the City Directory, being the first issued by the present publishers, is herewith offered to the public in the hope that it will meet with their approval. It will be observed that in its arrangement such changes have been made as in the opinion of the publishers tend to improve the general features of the work, and neither effort nor expense has been spared in making the Directory reliable and satisfac- tory, From its first inception only employes of extended experience have been engaged, and the utmost care has been taken to obtain correct and reliable information. In each succeeding edition continued improvement will be aimed at by the publishers, one of whom has recently removed to the city and will make it his future home. At the office of the Evening News, which is centrally located, and always accessible, the publishers have placed a file of directories of the principal cities in the United States and Canada, for the use of their patrons and strangers visiting the city.
We give the following as authentic figures for the present and three former years, and find that by actual count the directory of 1875 contains 27,023 ..

When we consider that our average estimate of population is at the rate of 314 to each name contained in the Directory, and that these names include only heads of families, business names and employes over 18 years of age, while in other large cities, such as New York, Chicago, St Louis, etc., they approximate five, three and one-half and four and one-quarter respectively to each name, we think we are more modest than otherwise in claiming a population at our going to press of fully 100,750. In taking as a basis for population our average at 314 per name, we find that we are as a rule, rather under than over the estimate as derived from other sources. For instance the directory of 1870 contains 12,519 names, which by our method of calculating would give a popu- lation of 40,686, while the city census of that year gives it at 48,244-a difference of over 7,500. We observe a similar difference in other cities, and think that were we to take 312 instead of 314 as our basis, we would not even then be overrating the actual population.
It is a notable fact that in a season of general depression this city has escaped many of the embarrassments which have so seriously crippled other communities, and has enjoyed quite a full share of general prosperity. It has been particularly noticeable, too, that many dwellings which were marked as vacant when the first canvass was made were occupied by people coming in from other cities and States, before the second visit, and as will appear from the increased number of names in this edition of the Directory as well as from the school enumeration that there has been a substantial and gratifying increase of population. The city has been very fortunate in the extent of new and sub- tantial enterprises which have been undertaken and completed within the year. The Belt Railroad. Stock Yards and Citizens Gas Company are among the most important, and their construction has furnished profitable employment to a very large number of our citizens from early spring to mid-winter.
