INTRODUCTORY.
The Publishers, in presenting this, the twenty-fifth volume of the Directory of Indianapolis, take pleasure in referring to its improved ap- pearance and many valuable auxiliaries. The canvass for the names has been conducted with great care and diligence, and the result, as pre- sented, may be accepted by the public as an improved personal and busi- ness guide, combining completeness with reliability, to as great a degree as is possible in the preparation of such a work in a city where removals, changes and periodical absentees are so numerous.
The increase in the population since our last issue has been very healthy, as we find a list of 31,500 names against 29,260 of the previous year, showing an increase of 2,240, being a little over 12 per cent., and by a computation of 1 to 3, gives a population of 94,500.
To our patrons and the public would say : We have established a Library of Directories of all the principal cities in the United States and State Gazetteers, which will be found on file for reference in the Public Library. To this issue we have added a new map of the city, drawn from the latest surveys, embracing every street recorded up to the present time; engraved on the map will be found an index of the streets and public buildings, parks, etc., which will at once give the locality of any street or place desired; on the whole it is the most correct map of the city yet published. For the convenience of those who use the Telephone, have added a complete and corrected list of Telephone subscribers up to the date of issue.
We would inform our advertising patrons that copies of this issue of the Directory have been placed in the lobbies of the Post-Office and Court House, and in the waiting rooms of the Union and Massachusetts Avenue Depots; this will not only greatly benefit the advertiser, but will also prove a relief to our subscribers from the annoyance of Directory Borrowers.
We extend our thanks for the interest manifested by the great major- ity of the business men of the city, and for the substantial encouragement extended to us in our labors.
