INDIANAPOLIS : COMPILED AND PUBLISHED BY R. L. POLK & CO. CARLON & HOLLENBECK, PRINTERS AND BINDERS. 1884.
Entered according to an act of Congress, in the year 1884, by R. L. Polk & Co., in the office of the Li- brarian of Congress, at Washington, D. C.
R 917.7252 1884
INTRODUCTORY.
The Publishers take pleasure in presenting this, the twenty-ninth, volume of the Indianapolis City Directory to the public, and have en- deavored to sustain the reputation previously earned for compiling a work that is as complete as a City Directory can well be made.
The population of Indianapolis, including suburbs, can safely be es- timated at 105,000, and the city proper at 88,000. The present volume contains 39,459 names, an increase of 1108 over last year, which, at the low ratio of three inhabitants to one directory name, would show an in- crease of 3324.
As a city Indianapolis stands pre-eminently high in manufacture, which is rapidly increasing from year to year, and as a railroad center it has a world-wide reputation. These vast interests combined, together with an intelligent, energetic business community and a healthful cli- mate, make it an exceptional point for the location of manufactures, and a delightful residence city.
The Publishers, in the compilation of this edition, have spared nei- ther pains nor expense to make it creditable alike to themselves and the thriving city which it represents. We would call special attention to the arrangement of the classified business directory, the miscellaneous portion of the book, the street directory, and complete map of the city which accompanies the work-all of which are indispensable to the public.
Thanks are tendered the public for remunerative appreciation of the work, and we trust that this issue will meet the same favor accorded previous editions.
THE PUBLISHERS.
