INTRODUCTORY
In presenting the thirtieth volume of the Indianapolis City Directory to the public, we feel assured that it will be found fully equal to any heretofore issued. The present volume contains nearly 40,000 names, in- cluding Brightwood, North Indianapolis, Irvington, Belmont, Mt. Jack- son and Haughville. This shows a decided increase over last year, not- withstanding the depression in business circles under which our city has labored during the past few months. The city of Indianapolis has a world-wide reputation as a railroad center, and is rapidly growing in favor as a manufacturing point, it being unequaled as a distributing center. In the compilation of this edition, nothing that experience could sug- gest has been neglected to make it as accurate as possible.
We have added the number and street where each person is regularly employed, as well as the number where each one keeps house or boards, on pages 81-649. This new addition will be most useful in finding per- sons at their respective places of business, who live away from the center of the city, or in the suburbs. This new feature makes this portion of our book a Double Directory, to what it and other Directories have here- tofore been.
The general business of the city, in spite of the disquieting times ex- perienced during the past year, has remained in a healthy state; and the publishers would thank the business public for a patronage not decreased by the rumors and uncertainties of the day.

Medical and Surgical Directory
-OF THE-
UNITED STATES, R. L. POLK & CO.,
PUBLISHERS.
-
The need of a complete and reliable Directory of Physicians and Surgeons of the United States is so apparent that we have decided to establish one.
The first volume will contain a full and accurate list of all Physicians in each State, arranged by States and Territories, and compiled alphabet- ically under the name of the city, town or village in which the physician is located, and showing the school practiced by each, the postoffice ad- dress, as well as the population of the place. In large cities the office number and street will be given. The work will also contain complete lists of all medical journals, their regular subscription price, names of editors and frequency of publication ; all medical colleges, hospitals, asylums, private sanitariums, water cures and health resorts in the United States, and much other information of value to the profession, and those whose business is directly or indirectly connected therewith. The whole will be so arranged that the names and locations of all Physicians in each State, city or village can be found at a glance. .When specially desired, the name of college and class of graduation will be in- serted after the name.
