Polk, R. L. & CO. Indianapolis directory FORTY-FOURTH VOLUME.
1898.
INTRODUCTORY.
Forty-four years ago the first volume of the Indianapolis City Directory was pub- lished. At that time it was a country vil- lage, whose population in 1850 was 8,091, which was increased to 18,611 by the cen- sus of 1860. Thus it can be said that the Indianapolis Directory is one of the oldest institutions of the city. From the forty- four volumes could be written the history of the growth and the development of In- dianapolis. Year by year, in its record of places and names, can be found the plant- ing, the rise and the progress of industry after industry, "until to-day they surround the city as completely as does the Belt Railroad. When the first little volume of the Directory was given to its patrons what are now the finest residence portions of the city were swamps which needed drain- age. Unsightly suburbs which, in 1854, seemed to challenge the further growth of the city, have given way to stately man- sions and artistic cottages. So the Di- rectory has seen Indianapolis rise from a straggling country town to a city which one of its distinguished citizens who has seen all the world and its glories has pro- nounced "the most beautiful city in the world."
Indianapolis is yet growing. The Directory of last year contained 65,320 names which, upon the reasonable basis of 234 inhabitants to each name, gave a population of 179,630. This volume contains 70,800 names, which means, on the same basis, a population of 194,700-a gain of 14,070, or of 7.8 per cent .- indicating a decade growth of 78 per cent. The poll of recent elections proves that these estimates. are conservative. The growth of the past ten years has been the most remarkable of any decade, since in that period Indianapolis has become dis- tinctively a city, in streets, buildings, street transportation and institutions. Ten years ago its streets, in rainy periods, were stretches of mire and the main avenues were so rough that it was dangerous to drive a carriage faster than a walk. Miles of asphalt have wrought a miracle, making Indianapolis one of the "show cities" of the country, while its miles of new sewers, with modern devices in houses, have made it one of the most healthful cities in the land. In no recent year has more gratifying progress been made than during 1897, in all that goes to make up a city, a hive of in-
-
dustry and a mart. Based upon bank clear- ings and other evidences of prosperity, the business of the city was at least 25 per cent. greater the last half of 1897 than the last half of 1895.
In no direction has the growth of the city been more apparent than in the character and number of the new buildings for busi- ness purposes. The change in this regard may be termed a revolution. Offices that were regarded as desirable years ago no longer have the best tenants. The so near completion of the State Soldiers' Monument enables one to see now the noble and artistic purpose of the designer and that when com- pleted Indiana's historical center will be. the location of one of the most imposing structures in the country.
The carrying out of the new system of re- naming many and renumbering of all the streets has indicated its wisdom. The Di- rectory has seen the necessity of it and has urged such a system. While it has cost the publishers much more money and time to revise its lists than it otherwise would, the advantages are already so obvious as to need no explanation. All that experience and watchfulness can do to make the new system most useful to the patrons of the Dirctory has been done to insure absolute accuracy. The publishers take great satis- faction in saying that they believe that the forty-fourth volume will be found as near the ideal as labor and experience can come.
While the limits of the city have been ex- tended during the year 1897, the Directory covers the same ground it has in past years, namely, the city proper, and all the suburbs, some of which are now a part of the Greater Indianapolis.
The publishers of the Directory ten years ago predicted that the population of Indian- apolis and its suburbs would be 200,000 in 1898. The fact that, by the most conserva- tive estimates, the population is now nearly 195,000 proves the realization of their ex- pectations. There is every reason to believe that the steady and yet not slow growth of the last decade will continue.
In conclusion, the publishers desire to thank their patrons for continued support and the public generally for the uniform courtesy extended to their agents in collect- ing the required data.

DIRECTORY BORROWERS
E RECEIVE many complaints from our patrons to the effect that they are bothered so much by BORROWERS. These parties are not the private citizen nor the stranger in the city, who steps in, looks at the Directory and goes out, but merchants, business and professional men, who need a Directory every day of the year, yet who are too close-fisted to buy one.
These same individuals are the ones that borrow your Directory "just for a minute," which, in the majority of cases, means a day or perhaps a week, unless you remember that they have it and send for it.
These same borrowers will tell the Directory canvasser that he has "no use for a Directory," that he "knows everybody," and, vice versa, "everybody knows him."

STREETS AND AVENUES.
T THE Street Directory is an alphabetical arrangement of the names of the Streets and Avenues of the city. By the decimal system of numbering houses recently adopted in this city, one hundred numbers are allotted to each square. On streets running north and south the numbering begins at Washington street. The streets running east and west are numbered East and West from Meridian street. All other streets not commencing at either of the above points are numbered in accordance with this system. The names and numbers of intersecting streets and avenues are given in the or- der in which they occur, which enables one to tell between what streets a certain number is. For instance, you have 820 Harlan street: by reference to the Street Directory, you find 800 at Lexington av. and 900 at Pleasant street; consequently, the place you wish to find is between Lexington av. and Pleasant street.
The marginal letters of the alphabet refer to the nearest street car line. For example, you wish to go to 520 E. Sixteenth: you refer to Sixteenth street in the Street Directory and find that 520 would be between Central av. and Park av. and the letter "B" in the margin, then by referring to the street railway lines you find the letter "B" is the Central av. line, which is the nearest car.
