FORTY-FIFTH VOLUME. R

INTRODUCTORY. B42041
The first volume of the Indianapolis City Directory was issued in 1855. It was a small volume, but Indianapolis was then a small city. As Indianapolis has grown, the Di- rectory has increased in pages until it is a large volume. At first but comparatively few copies were published; now it is an es- sential in every store, office and factory in the city. No book is so much in evidence. The person coming to town to find friend or business man, goes to the nearest office on his arrival to find a Directory. If he does not find it, he departs with the impression that the people in that place are not doing much business. By the same token, if the Directory is nearly out of its covers and bears marks of much usage, he concludes that it is a place frequented by many peo- ple. No book in the city is so much con- sulted. The lady making her list of invita- tions consults it for addresses; the business man sending out notices or filling orders finds it necessary and all those who desire to find somebody seek the City Directory. If a man in another city writes to ascertain something of a resident, the person of whom. the inquiry is made goes to the City Di- rectory to find the name. If it is not there the answer is "I cannot tell."
This Directory contains 71,747 names. On the basis of 234 inhabitants to each name in the Directory, the population of Indianapo- lis January 1, 1899, was 197,304. Last year the population of the city, on the same basis, was 194,700-not so large a gain as the year previous, because of the absorp- tion of several suburbs in. 1897. Increase in population is not, however, the best indica- tion of material growth. In business, and particularly in those industries which af- ford full employment to the people, 1898 was one of unprecedented prosperity. That its business and industry are on a sound basis, the shortest list of business failures in re- cent years is the best possible proof. The fact that Indianapolis financial companies took the last issue of bonds as the lowest bidders shows that capital is abundant in the city.
It may be said that Indianapolis is what it is to-day more by what may be called the inventions of man than any city in the country. It has no navigable rivers which, before the era of railroads, made the build- ing of large cities possible. Because it was near the geographical center of the State it was selected for its capital. Its first set- tlement was if 2ยบ20. It could scarcely have
been called a village in 1825 when it was made the capital. The location of the capi- tal in Indianapolis called settlers to the vi- cinity, but having no navigable river and no roads, it was isolated. The real growth of the city began with its first railroad, in 1847. Thereafter, its growth kept pace with the development of railroads, which have be- come its arterial system through which pul- sates the life blood of commerce and binds it to the rest of the country. Location and its system of railroads have made Indian- apolis the real capital and metropolis of Indiana as few State capitals are. As the years pass, Indianapolis becomes more and more the political, commercial and social center of Indiana. Whatever the citizen of Indiana may say of the greed of Indian- apolis when legislative favors and offices are in question, he feels that the capital of the State is his and he is proud of it. And well he may be, since the Indianapolis of to-day is made up largely of men who were born in other counties, thus connect- ing it by kindred or social ties to every part of Indiana. Thus the future of Indian- apolis is bound to the rest of the State by many and inseparable ties. No section of the State can prosper without Indianapolis sharing the benefit, and this city cannot en- joy a prosperity that the rest of the State cannot share.
Almost the center of the country's popu- lation, Indianapolis is fast becoming one of the favorite cities for national assemblages of business men, scientific and professional organizations. It has ample hotel and other accommodations, while the town, built upon what was once swamps and bogs, has be- come one of the most beautiful cities in the land-to use the words of Admiral Brown, "the most beautiful city in the world in which to live."
The publishers congratulate themselves that the Forty-fifth Volume is an im- provement in some respects upon those which have preceded it. It cannot contain many new features, but the greater fa- miliarity with the city and the greater ac- uracy incident to experience warrants the conviction that the issue for 1899 is superior to its predecessors.
With each passing year the publishers have realized their obligation to the people of Indianapolis for their support and uni- form courtesy to their agents. Their obli- gation is greater now than a year ago.
