INTRODUCTORY.

1358774

Fresh and unsoiled, we place in the hands of our patrons the Indianapolis City Directory for the year 1900, while the vol- ume of 1899, bearing marks of much usage, will be thrown aside as a thing that has had its day.

The Directory of 1900 contains 74,370 names, which, on the basis of 234 inhabi- tants to each name, gives the city of In- dianapolis a population of 204,518 January 1, 1900. A year earlier the population upon the same basis was 197,304 a gain the past year of 7,214 inhabitants-an increase of over 3.6 per cent. If the population should increase in proportion only as much each year as it has the past, the population of Indianapolis January 1, 1910, will exceed 275,000. If the increase each year during the next decade should be 3.6 per cent., in 1910 the population of Indianapolis will be . er 290,000. The growth of the city the past decade will show a much larger per- centage of gain the last five years of it than during the first five, consequently statistics sustain the prediction that In- dianapolis will have a population of 300,000 January 1, 1910.

In population, however, numbers are not of as much account as quality. There is no "submerged tenth" in Indianapolis. Its pauperism is the smallest of any city of its size in the country. This is because it has nothing to attract the pauperism of other countries, as have the larger cities. Fur- thermore, it is safe to say that in no other city of the size of Indianapolis do so many people own or have an interest in the houses in which they live.

.

As a residence city Indianapolis is com- ing into great favor. It possesses all of the advantages of the larger cities without the objections which count against them. Indianapolis is located in the heart of the nation's population. It is situated about one of those ganglia of railroads along whose arterial system of steel throbs the life and commerce of a continent. It is of easier access to all the great cities than any other city of its population. Suited to cheap, rapid transit, there is practically no limit to its expansion, thereby offering in- ducements to those who would build resi- dences which the very large cities cannot offer. It is an attractive city. Those who come to it once desire another visit. The Coal Miners' Association was so well pleased with the city that it voted to hold a second meeting here in spite of its cus- tom of going from city to city. No city of its population has the facilities of Indian- apolis for conventions and national gather- ings.

During the past year a number of inter- urban electric railways have been put under construction. One of the most im- portant of these will be completed in July, which will put nearly every city, town and hamlet in the gas belt in direct and frequent communication with Indianapolis. Such is the surface of the country about Indianapolis in every direction that the city is destined to become the center of the most extensive system of inter-urban rail- ways in the country. Thus the real In- dianapolis will extend miles in every di- rection beyond the municipal limits and be- yona the sphere of the Directory of the City of Indianapolis.

The year 1899 has been in all material progress the most prosperous Indianapolis has ever seen. The belt of industries which surround it has broadened by the extension of old or the erection of new enterprises. There has been employment for all who desire it. Its trade, wholesale and retail, has been a fourth greater than in any pre- vious year. Its banks have so extended their business into the surrounding country by their conservative management that Indianapolis has become a "reserve city." It has become more and more one of the centers in which extensive insurance and financial institutions direct their affairs. A plan for the construction of a great power-creating establishment designed to furnish the power to move the machinery of a score of small industries is under con- sideration, with every assurance of suc- cess.

These facts and many others which might be given warrant the publishers of the Indianapolis Directory in congratulat- ing their patrons that the forty-sixth issue for the year 1900 goes to them with more positive assurances of growth and general prosperity than have attended either of the forty-five predecessors. In some re- spects this issue is superior to any of those volumes which have preceded it, simply be- cause the experience of years has devel- oped greater familiarity with the city and accuracy of € ecution. More and more the Directory bec mes the annual record of the life of a city and its growth.

Each issue of the Directory increases the obligation of the publishers to the people of Indianapolis for their liberal patronage and their courtesy to those who represent them in the preparation of the work. For the patronage and co-operation of years the publishers most gratefully extend their sin- cere thanks.
