INTRODUCTORY
1904
The fiftieth volume of the INDIANAPOLIS CITY DIRECTORY is herewith presented to its patrons and the public.
The Directory for 1904 contains 83,526 names, an increase over 1903 of 3,026 names, which, multiplied by 2}, shows an increase in population of 7,565; and on the same basis we esti- mate the total population embraced in the territory covered by the Directory at 208,815.
By comparisons with the population statistics of the last United States census and the several Directory estimates, it has been shown that the old multiple of 24 to each name contained in the Directory, which has been used for some years, has been too high, and by figuring on a basis of 2} a result as nearly correct as pos- sible is obtained. The improved methods employed in the last United States census have produced substantially accurate results, and they are so applied that the percentage of error will be distrib- uted pretty equally throughout the country, and thus for compara- tive purposes the results may be absolutely relied upon.
Evidences of our prosperous and healthy growth and con- tinued commercial activity, besides our increasing population, are our bank clearings for the past year of $312,126,271.76, show- ing an increase of nearly $48,000,000.00 over the previous year. Postoffice receipts for the year 1903 were $675,086.19, showing an increase over 1902 of about $75,000.00. Real estate transfers re- corded during the year show an increase of $1,000,000.00, the total amounting to $14,963,752.63, and according to the building per- mits issued there was over $3,000,000.00 invested in this manner during the year.
We desire to thank our many patrons for their continued sup- port, and the public generally for the courteous treatment ex- tended our canvassers.
