Introductory : 1908

Another year has rolled around, and again we take pleasure in presenting to our patrons and the public the Fifty-fourth Annual Volume of the Indianapolis City Directory, on which we have spared neither labor or expense in our efforts to make it surpass its predecessors for accuracy and completeness.

SPECIAL ADVERTISING DEPARTMENT

We wish to call special attention to our new department, pages 1427 to 1458, in which advertisements are arranged in alphabetical order according to business, and which we hope to largely increase from year to year as the value of represen- tation in this department becomes recognized.

DIRECTORY LIBRARY

Our Directory Library maintained in our offices, 320-324 American Central Life Building, contains the Directories of all the principal cities in the United States and a great number of smaller places. These Directories are kept on file for the benefit of our patrons and the public, and can be referred to at all times during business hours.

POPULATION

This Directory contains 94,384 names, and, on the basis of 212 inhabitants to each name, we estimate the population embraced in the territory covered by this Directory at 235,960, showing an increase over 1907 of 7,080. Many additional and interesting facts will be found on pages 73 to 76 setting forth the advantages of our city.

We desire to thank our many patrons for their continued support and the public generally for the courteous treatment extended our canvassers.

INDIANAPOLIS TO-DAY

We have at the present time 168 miles of sewers, with sanitary condi- tions the best ; 125 miles of paved streets, and 255 miles of water mains.

Indianapolis is noted the world over for its beautifully shaded streets and comfortable homes. In the number of workingmen who own their homes, it is the second city in America.

There is no better labor market in the world. There are 45,500 people employed in the city by the manufacturing industries. Of this number fully 30,000 may be called skilled mechanics.

Forty-five hotels afford accommodations to all visitors, even during the many conventions that are held here, and which are of such frequency as to average one for each day in the year.

The largest industries here are engine and boiler shops, mill machinery, saw manufactories, structural iron and bridge works, foundries and ma- chine shops, buggy and automobile manufactories and packing houses. We, however, can claim that no city in the world has a larger variety of industries.

Indianapolis is also noted as having one of the best public school sys- tems in the world. Visitors come to our city daily to investigate its merits. We have sixty-five public schools, two high schools (one academic and one manual training), four colleges and academies and one main public library, with eight branch stations.
