INTRODUCTION

The 1918 edition of the Indianapolis City Directory is herewith pre- sented with the belief that it is as complete and accurate as care and experience will produce.

The Directory contains 1950 pages. The Alphabetical Directory of names begins at page 198 and ends at page 1368. Names and changes of address received too late for regular insertion are printed on page 52.

Pages 13 to 51 include a variety of miscellaneous information such as executive, health, police, fire, educational, parks, water works, and other departments; ward boundaries, churches, schools, banks, incor- porated companies, the postoffice, courts, hospitals, clubs, fraternal, benevolent, and labor organizations, county, township and federal officials, and much other valuable information.

As in former years, the canvass for names did not stop at the City Limits proper, but embraced all contiguous suburban territory, which to all intents and purposes, in fact in all ways except governmental identity, are an integral part of the social life and numerical greatness of one com- munity, dependent upon Indianapolis for their very existence, and yet more or less reluctant to join their destiny with that of the great city. There are few residing in this territory whose business or employment is not in Indianapolis, and it is simply the enumeration of thousands of people within the city to which they really belong.

Included in the canvass and compiled in the alphabetical list are the names of those who, having homes in Indianapolis, have volunteered in the U. S. Army and Navy, or have been drafted under the Conscription Act and mobilized at training camps, as well as many who are in active. service at the front in the present European War.

The "Buyers' Guide" occupies pages 53 to 196. The Street and Avenue Guide and Directory of Householders extends from page 1371 to 1776. The Classified Business Directory begins on page 1777 and covers 170 pages.

The General Index, the Index to Miscellaneous Information and the Index to Advertisements will be found on pages 9 to 12.

In the present volume all of the local features which have proved so satisfactory to our patrons in the past have been retained, and several new ones added.

POPULATION OF GREATER INDIANAPOLIS, 301,980.

In this Directory there are listed 120,792 individual names; a con- . servative estimate of the population is formed by multiplying the number of names by 23, to allow for the names of married women and children which have not been included. This gives Greater Indianapolis a popu- lation of 301,980.

A complete library embracing directories of all the principal cities is maintained in our offices, 320-324, 8 E. Market St., for the convenience and free use of our patrons. For the benefit of our advertisers and as a means of advertising the City and its business interests, copies of this edition of the Indianapolis City Directory will be placed on file in the Directory Libraries in all the larger cities throughout the country.

Distinctions Which Give the City Supremacy as a Modern Progressive American Community, Furnished and Compiled by the

Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce

Indianapolis is sixty miles from the center of population of the United States. It is in the geographical center of manufacturing of the United States.

It is in population, transportation facilities and volume of business trans- acted, the largest inland city, not on a navigable stream, in the United States. It has a population of 301,980, 82% of which are native born (white), and more than 2,000,000 people living within three hours' ride of the city.

It is the capital of Indiana and in the geographical center of the state, with railroads or electric railway connections with every county in the state.

It has an area of 42 square miles.

It is the seat of the following state institutions: Indiana State Fair, Indiana School for the Blind, Indiana School for the Deaf, School of Medicine of Indiana University, the Indiana Girls' School, the Indiana Women's Prison, the Central Hospital for the Insane.

The thirteen electric interurban lines radiating from Indianapolis comprise one of the most extensive systems in the United States. The terminal building, train sheds, tracks and freight houses are valued at $1,316,151. From this station in 1916, 7,208,749 passengers arrived and departed, an average of 19,696 per day; 254,029 passenger cars, an average of 694 per day, and 25,980 freight cars, an average of 71 per day. In 1917, 8,465,118, or a daily average of 23,192 passengers arrived and departed.

It has three direct steam roads to the coal fields of Indiana.

It has two steam roads direct to the stone quarries of southern Indiana.

The Marmon, Stutz, National, Premier, Cole, Empire and Colonial auto- mobiles are manufactured in Indianapolis. The Ford Company has a mammoth assembling plant here.

It has one of the greatest motor speedways in the United States.

It has the U. S. Government Aviation Warehouse and Repair Station, em- ploying at the present time 100 expert mechanics, 600 enlisted men and 25 officers. The total resources of Indianapolis banks, January 1, 1918, were $142,775,446. The bank clearances for 1917 were $684,058,764-a gain of $121,426,573 over 1916.

The land and building value of the U. S. Postoffice and Federal Building is approximately $5,301,973. Postoffice receipts for year 1917 were. $1,970,749.34. 648 mailmen and clerks are employed by the Indianapolis Postoffice.

The city has 200 wholesale and jobbing houses, representing all lines of trade, with a market extending well over the Central West.

It had 317 miles of permanently improved streets January 1, 1918. $149,987.13 was spent to clean the streets in 1917.

It has 140 miles of city electric car lines, operating over double tracks, with four cent fare and universal transfers.

The total assessed valuation of Indianapolis January 1, 1918, was $263,296,- 830.00-based on from 50 to 60% of true value. Tax rate, $2.68 on each $100.00. The municipal bonded indebtedness is $4,471,708.

According to government reports, the per capita indebtedness of Indian- apolis in 1917 was $22.69.

The value of city property January 1, 1918, was $9,071,351.81. V It has 420 miles of sewers.

It has 426 miles of water mains. 26,500,000 gallons of water is used each day. The water supply is abundant and pure. No other city surpasses Indian- apolis in the excellence of its water. The value of the' pumping station is $12,500,000.00.

In 1917 there were 5,943 births and 4,598 deaths, making the birth rate 19.84 per 1,000 and the death rate 15.33 per 1,000 of population.

Building permits were issued in 1916 for $7,643,974.00 worth of building.

701,049 books were loaned to 41,000 persons by the public library in 1917. 115,000 persons visited the reference and information department consulting over' 200,000 books. The reference library in the Indiana State House is one of the. largest and best organized libraries to be found in any state.

It has five public auditoriums with combined seating capacity of 12,000, which are available for state and national conventions.

It has 63 hotels, which afford living on any scale desired for conventions of any size. It has exceptional facilities for national conventions and entertains several hundred thousand visitors each year.

The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in Indianpolis is recognized as one of the finest of its kind in the United States.

It has thirty-three modern office buildings, six to sixteen stories high.

It has a Y. M. C. A. building which the public erected at a cost of $250,000;

a Y. W. C. A. building which the public provided at a cost of $140,000 and recently completed a colored Y. M. C. A. building at a cost of $100,000.

INDIANAPOLIS

It has 70 public and 3 high school buildings, valued at $5,511,608.00. 33 of these schools are equipped for manual training and domestic science.

It has 17 steam railroads connecting all the cities in the central west. Freight shipments can be made thru the Springfield and Peoria gateways, thus avoiding the St. Louis or Chicago congested districts. Direct connections are also made with New York, Boston, Washington, Philadelphia and all eastern cities.

In the John Herron Art Institute the city has one of the noted art museums of the United States.

In Fort Benjamin Harrison it has one of the largest United States army posts in the country.

It has 24 parks, well distributed thruout the city, with an area of 1908 acres, valued at $2,981,293.00.

It is the home city of Vice-President Thos. R. Marshall, and former Vice- President Chas. W. Fairbanks, and the late James Whitcomb Riley, late Ben- jamin Harrison, Booth Tarkington and Meredith Nicholson.

Indianapolis is represented in the American Association of Base Ball, and won the pennant in 1917.

It has 40 motion picture houses and 7 play houses.

It has 200 churches of all denominations, having a membership and affiliated attendance of nearly 120,000 people.

The U. S. census of 1910 gave Indianapolis 53,359 homes and 58,645 families. It has the reputation of a home owning city.

It has one of the largest city market houses of the Middle West, which sup- plies the city with the best products of the country.

It is abundantly supplied with apartment houses.

The average temperature for the year 1917 was 49.6 degrees, only 42 days of the year when the temperature was 32 degrees or lower.

It is pre-eminently an industrial city because of its geographical location in relation to the general market, because of its exceptional shipping facilities, abun- dance of labor, the excellence of its labor conditions and the nearness of the fuel supply.

It has approximately 500 manufacturing concerns and 1900 commercial con- cerns. 85 new manufacturing concerns began business in 1917.

According to the last government report published for Indianapolis, in 1914 the average number of wage earners in manufacturing establishments was 30,971. Salaries and wages paid, $27,236,332.00. Value of products manufactured, $188,- 336,068. The value of products manufactured in 1917 should far exceed the 1914 figures on account of the natural growth of Indianapolis manufacturies and the large amount of war material being manufactured in the city.

It has several very large industrial buildings for small manufacturing con- cerns which supply space, power and other facilities at reasonable cots.

It has artificial gas at 55c a thousand feet, the scale decreasing to 40c for the large consumers. This is said to be the lowest price for artificial gas of any city in the United States.

A larger stock of iron and steel is carried in Indianapolis than any city in the central west outside of Chicago.

It has 92 exporting and 107 importing firms or individuals.

It has 186 branch offices of outside concerns.

In 1917 more than 4,000,000 bushels of wheat was handled by local dealers. In all, 33,000 car loads of grain was handled, valued at approximately $75,000,- 000.00.

Live stock valued at $4,464,452 was received or shipped from Indianapolis Stock Yards in 1916.

Real estate transfers in 1916 were $20,923,982.27, and in 1917, $18,622,664.03.
