INTRODUCTION

The 1926 edition of the Indianapolis City Directory is herewith pre- sented to patrons. The publishers feel assured that the work affords a complete and comprehensive epitome of the vast and diversified interests and activities of the city-civic, social, commercial and industrial.

In the present volume all of the essential features contained in previ- ous issues have been retained and amplified and improvements added as suggested by experience, in order to add to the value and usefulness of the Directory.

The publishers enjoy the prestige and advantage of a complete organ- ization and thorough system essential in the production of Directories, and the additional advantage of having the courteous co-operation of citi- zens in furnishing information. These factors, added to the liberal support of patrons as shown by the advertisements displayed upon the printed page, were vital to the success of the publication.

The statistics presented following this introduction are eloquent as visualizing the greatness of Indianapolis. Touching as they do every phase of the city's commercial, industrial, and social life, they are both instructive to residents as well as to the thousands who consult the Directory in the Directory Libraries maintained in all the principal cities, where copies of this Directory are placed by the publishers. The Directory contains a valuable fund of information concerning State, County and City Executives, Banks, Asylums, Hospitals and Homes, Building, Loan and Savings Associations, Cemeteries, Charity Organiza- tions, Churches, Clubs, College Societies, Courts, Federal Officers, Foreign Consular Corps, Insurance Companies, Labor Organizations, Libraries, Newspapers and Periodicals, Medical and Dental Colleges, Miscellaneous Organizations, Musical Societies, Post Office Data, Public Buildings and Halls, Parks, Public and Private Schools, Railways, Secret Societies, etc.

An invaluable feature of the Directory is the Buyers' Guide. This section of the Directory, printed on tinted paper, includes numerous adver- tisements of the leading manufacturing, business and professional inter- ests of Indianapolis. They have been carefully grouped by departments and are indexed under classified headings and otherwise in various parts of the Directory. A casual perusal of these advertisements will picture many interesting phases of the city's activities. They are not display advertisements, primarily, however, but rather are reference advertising

at its best. In a bustling manufacturing city like Indianapolis, the need for this kind of information readily at hand is very great, and the general appreciation of this need is evidenced by the liberal patronage the City Directory enjoys in many and varied lines of trade.

POPULATION

As in previous years the Directory canvass was not confined to the actual city limits, but embraced all adjacent suburban territory, the resi- dents of which are to all intents and purposes a part of the social, com- mercial and industrial life of Indianapolis; these residents are dependent upon the city for their prosperity, and they enjoy the civic advantages offered by it, since most of these residents have their business interests and activities therein and are intimately connected with it in every relation except governmental. In this issue of the Directory there are listed 154,047 individual names; a conservative estimate of the population is obtained by multiplying the number of names by 21/2 to allow for the names of married women and children which have not been included in the enumeration. This gives Greater Indianapolis a population of 385,117, a gain of 13,612 over the population of 1925.

DIRECTORY LIBRARY

A library of City and County Directories and State Gazetteers is maintained by us in our offices, 225 North New Jersey Street, for the free use of our patrons. As the latest Directories are issued they will be added to the library, thereby keeping it up to date from year to year. We extend a cordial invitation to each and every one of our subscribers to make frequent use of the library and to consult the Directories on file as often as desired, when information in regard to any individual, firm, corporation, or institution located in other cities is desired.

MUNICIPAL PUBLICITY-ADVERTISING INDIANAPOLIS -

An important function of the Directory is to set forth the character- istics and advantages of the city as a place of residence, as a business loca- tion, as an industrial site and as an educational center. The Directory acts as a mirror, reflecting all that is noteworthy in the city in the above respects. In order to spread this information regarding the city broadcast over the country the publishers place copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries which are maintained in all the larger cities of the country, where they are readily available for reference use by the public. There they serve as perpetual advertisements of Indianapolis, for business men the country over realize that the City Directory represents the community as it really is.

Indianapolis, based on estimates of the U. S. Census Bureau, Bell Telephone Co., Engineers, City Directory and several other surveys had, on July 1, 1926, about 375,000 population, showing an increase of more than 60,000 people since 1920.

In population, transportation facilities, and volume of business, Indianapolis is the largest inland city in the world not on navigable water.

Indianapolis is within 55 miles of the center of population of the United States.

Indianapolis is the commercial, industrial, as well as the political and governmental capital of Indiana. Directly in the center and having a name suggestive of its state, Indianapolis is more truly a capital than any other city in America.

Indianapolis has a transient population of more than 20,000 people daily.

The assessed valuation of Indianapolis is in excess of $639,0000,0000.

Indianapolis will have a population of 500,000 by 1935.

Indianapolis is known as a home owning city.

Indianapolis is known as the economic center of the United States for shipping and receiving goods.

Indianapolis' climatic conditions are ideal for both industry and agriculture.

Low humidity prevails in both summer and winter.

Practically 16 hours of daylight may be utilized during the season suitable for outside work.

Indianapolis has an area of 51 square miles.

Indianapolis has 420 miles of permanently improved streets.

Indianapolis has 169 miles of city electric car lines.

Indianapolis has over 30 miles of boulevards.

Indianapolis has 600 miles of sewers and 550 miles of water mains.

Indianapolis' water supply is thoroughly filtered and treated with chlorine to in- sure purity. Thousands of analyses are made annually.

Indianapolis has more homes per thousand people than any other city in the United States over 200,000.

More than 10,000 new homes have been built in the last four years.

There is nothing to hinder the city's growth in any direction, making it unnecessary to live in congested tenement houses because of restricted building conditions.

The Public Library erected at a cost of $510,000 is one of the most beautiful in the country. It contains over 225,000 volumes and maintains 15 branches throughout the city.

Indianapolis has a splendid Y. M. C. A. erected by the public at a cost of $250,000 -also a fine Y. W. C. A. and a colored Y. M. C. A.

The John Herron Art Institute is one of the noted art museums of the United States.

The Soldiers and Sailors Monument, located in the heart of the city, is recognized as one of the finest pieces of collossal sculpture in the United States and is second in height only to the Washington Monument.

INDIANAPOLIS

Fort Benjamin Harrison, located just outside of the city, is one of the largest army posts in the country.

Indianapolis is represented in the American Association of Baseball, winning the pennant in 1908 and 1917.

Indianapolis has one of the largest city market houses in the United States, supply- ing fresh products from the country.

Indianapolis has the greatest motor speedway in the world. Every year the 500- mile race is held here between drivers from all over the world. This is the world's premier sporting event and attracts thousands of people from all lands.

The United States Post Office and Federal Building is valued at $5,301,937.

Indianapolis Post Office receipts for 1925 were $4,517,692.71.

Indianapolis was the home of the late Vice-President Thomas R. Marshall, the late Vice-President Charles W. Fairbanks, the late James Whitcomb Riley, the late Benjamin Harrison, of Booth Tarkington and Meredith Nicholson.

Indianapolis has 25 parks well distributed throughout the city and connected by a beautiful boulevard system.

Indianapolis has ten golf courses and many public tennis courts.

Indianapolis is the National Headquarters of the American Legion and the Legion Weekly.

A war Memorial Plaza, five blocks in length, having at its head the beautiful Public Library, and at its foot the Post Office and Federal Building, is being built by the city, county and state.

The plaza will practically adjoin the down town district and in the middle block will be built a magnificent Memorial Building to house The American Legion and other patriotic societies.

Indianapolis is the seat of the following State Institutions: Indiana State Fair, Indiana Institute for the Blind, Indiana School for the Deaf, Schools of Medicine and Dentistry of Indiana University, Indiana University Extension Center, Indiana Girls' School, Indiana Women's Prison and the Central Hospital for the Insane.

Indianapolis Fire Department is completely motorized and of highest efficiency. Indianapolis has 19 hospitals and dispensaries, ranking among the finest in the country.

Downtown Indianapolis, according to experts, is the best planned of all cities. There is not a street less than 90 feet wide and the one having the heaviest traffic is 120 feet in width.

Indianapolis has 45 banks and trust companies and branches with resources of more than $250,000,000.

Indianapolis is known as a "panic proof" city.

Indianapolis has 54 building and loan associations with resources of more than $50,000,000.

The Railroadmen's Building and Loan of Indianapolis is the largest in the world.

Indianapolis has about 40 large modern, centrally located office buildings. Office rental ranges from $1.00 to $3.00 per square foot per year.

Indianapolis has about 4,500 retail stores and 300 jobbers.

Indianapolis has 16 railroads and 13 interurban lines making direct connections with all parts of the state and nation.

Indianapolis has the best location in the United States for quick economic parcel post delivery. The first three or four zones in which the lowest rates prevail cover a more thickly populated business territory than for any other city.

There are 75 mail trains in and 80 mail trains out of Indianapolis every 24 hours. Mail deposited at the Post Office before noon will reach any destination within 500 miles in time for the next morning delivery.

A large number of motor bus lines radiate from Indianapolis, covering practically all parts of the state.

INDIANAPOLIS

There are from four to six deliveries and 10 to 15 collections in the business dis- trict every day, and from 2 to 3 deliveries and 2 to 6 collections in the residence section.

Indianapolis is the largest interurban center in the world.

Indianapolis has the largest interurban passenger station and the largest interur- ban freight depot in the world.

Indianapolis entertains from 300 to 500 conventions annually.

Indianapolis is the commercial center of an agricultural territory of great wealth. Crops within 100 miles of Indianapolis are valued at more than $500,000,000.

More than 20,000,000 bushels of corn are handled annually by our Board of Trade. Indianapolis Stock Yards receipts for 1925 comprised 2,066,703 hogs, 547,313 cattle and 146,682 sheep.

Indianapolis, on account of its central location and the network of good roads, leading in is the largest "drive in" hog market in the world.

Indianapolis is the only city whose merchants were twice awarded the "Truth Trophy" by the Associated Advertising Clubs of America. The Better Business Bureau of Indianapolis is assigned to the task of keeping Indianapolis advertising up to this high standard and is in a large way responsible for the result.

Illiteracy in Indianapolis has been reduced to 2.1 per cent.

From kindergarten to college, Indianapolis offers educational advantages unsur- passed in any city.

Indianapolis has 83 public schools, 4 high schools, and 47 free kindergartens.

Butler University of Indianapolis recently received an endowment and will move to a larger and better location here. This will enable it to become an important institution in a few years.

Many other schools, giving training in business, medicine, law, art, pharmacy, veterinary practice, industry, missionary work and social service, are located here.

The Typothetae School of Printing, in connection with the Arsenal Technical High School under the auspices of the United Typothetae of America offers the best avail- able course in the printing industry.

Pupils in the schools are cared for by a special group of doctors and nurses who give the best of advice and treatment.

Indianapolis has 172 white protestant churches, 64 colored protestant churches and 21 catholic churches.

Indianapolis aids charity by the Community Chest method. The leading business men of the city collect and distribute the funds of the various organizations once a year, eliminating the individual soliciting of each organization.

Indianapolis has 9 social clubs which own their own buildings. The home of the Indianapolis Athletic Club, recently completed, cost over $2,000,000, and combines the finest features of all the best athletic clubs of the country. The Columbia Club also recently constructed a new home at a cost of over $1,500,000.

Parks, playgrounds, tennis court, baseball diamonds and golf courses furnish everyone of all ages ample opportunity for out-door recreation.

Indianapolis has nine theaters which bring the best plays, vaudeville and musical attractions. Fifty-five cinema houses show the best moving pictures produced.

During the summer two municipal theaters are maintained in Public Parks, afford- ing free entertainment to thousands of peeople.

Indianapolis business men are well organized. The Board of Trade, Merchants Association, Associated Employers, Business Men's Association, Central Indiana Pur- chasing Agents Association, Credit Men's Association, Employment Managers' Associa- tion, Retail Coal Dealers' Association and Better Business Bureau comprise the leading ones.

Products valued at more than $450,000,000 were manufactured in Indianapolis during 1925.

INDIANAPOLIS

Indianapolis has approximately 1,250 manufacturing concerns making over 1,000 distinct articles.

Indianapolis has the largest exclusive manufacturer of silk hose in the country.

Meat packing and slaughtering concerns turn out products valued at $135,000,000.

Indianapolis has the largest independent hog killing plant in the United States. Indianapolis has the largest shock absorber factory in the world.

Indianapolis has one of the largest pop-corn machine manufacturers in the world.

Indianapolis has the largest manufacturer of metal post office equipment in the world.

Indianapolis has the largest exclusive cotton glove factory in the United States. Indianapolis has the largest manufacturer of poultry remedies in the world.

Indianapolis is the home of one of the largest food products manufacturers in the world. The kitchens of this plant are known the world over for their size, beauty and cleanliness.

Indianapolis has the largest manufacturer of commercial auto bodies in the world.

One of the largest manufacturers of pharmaceutical products in the world is located in Indianapolis.

Indianapolis has one of the largest hog serum laboratories in the world.

Indianapolis has one of the largest plants manufacturing silent transmission chains.

Indianapolis has one of the largest battery plants in the world.

Indianapolis has one of the largest manufacturers of motorized fire apparatus in the world.

One of the leading saw manufacturers of the world is located in Indianapolis, making saws of every size and description.

Indianapolis manufacturers located on the Belt R. R. have advantages no other city in the United States can offer to her industries. They ship goods and receive goods directly from or to their plants, over any railroad entering Indianapolis, by routing through the Belt R. R. which does the switching for all lines at a uniform rate.

Indianapolis manufacturers have enormous trade in foreign countries.

Indianapolis has great diversity of industry. Surplus labor caused from depres- sion in certain lines is soon absorbed by the other lines not affected.

Indianapolis is fast becoming a center for the manufacture of wearing apparel of all kinds.

Indianapolis furniture companies furnish cabinets for many of the eastern talking machine companies.

Five Indianapolis made cars have been victorious in the 500-mile race at the Indianapolis Speedway.

-. Some of the best racing motors in the world are designed and made in Indianapolis.

THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The one organization in a community which upholds the ideals of good citizenship, right living and active co-operation among individuals and organizations making up the city's life is the Chamber of Commerce. It surveys the community with a telescope to see the whole at once and at the same time with a microscope to search out the details. It encourages and co-ordinates individual efforts and takes its prominent place in all worth-while community activities. It spells its mission in life "Give," not "Get." The Chamber of Commerce is the guide, philosopher and friend of the home city and the community. With this background in mind any community must thoroughly realize that the efforts of community upbuilding tend toward evolution. It therefore becomes of the utmost importance to each of us to realize that the Chamber of Commerce is an organization through which public spirited citizens in a community may express them- selves collectively on questions of community welfare and through which they may make their collective desires effective. Cities do not happen-co-operation builds them. In business as in life, he gets the most out of it who gives the most to it. The dividends are based on the investment.
