1. KNOW YOUR MONEY! Study the bills you receive so as to become familiar with the workmanship on them, especially in the por- traits.

2. COMPARE a suspected bill with a genuine of the same type and denomination. Observe these things:

PORTRAIT Counterfeit-Dull, smudgy, or unnaturally white, scratchy; oval background is dark, lines irregular and broken. Portrait merges into the background.

Genuine-Stands out distinctly from the oval back- ground. Eyes appear lifelike. Back- ground is a fine screen of regular lines.

COLORED SEAL

Counterfeit-Saw-tooth points around rim are usu- ally uneven, broken off.

Genuine-Saw-tooth points around rim are even and sharp.

SERIAL Counterfeit-Poorly printed, badly spaced, uneven NUMBERS in appearance.

Genuine-Figures firmly and evenly printed, well spaced.

PAPER Counterfeit-Generally has no silk threads, but these may be imitated by very small red and blue ink lines.

Genuine-Printed on distinctive paper in which very small red and blue silk threads are scat- tered. The silk threads are not always noticeable on bills that are badly soiled or worn.

3. RUBBING a bill on a piece of paper will not prove it is genuine or counterfeit; ink can be rubbed from good bills as well as bad ones.

4. CONSULT an experienced money-handler or police officer to make sure, if you are still in doubt, whether a bill is genuine or coun- terfeit.

5. REMEMBER, NOT ALL STRANGERS ARE COUNTER- FEITERS, BUT ALL COUNTERFEITERS ARE LIKELY TO BE STRANGERS.

Five Major Departments

The five major departments are arranged in the following order :-

I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major department of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of Indianapolis, arranged in alphabet- ical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or market for goods. In a great commercial and industrial center like Indianapolis, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commer- cial, industrial and professional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Indianapolis, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city.

III. THE POSTAL ZONE GUIDE, on green paper, is the third major department. This section is reproduced verbatim from copy supplied by the postal authorities.

IV. THE GUIDE TO THE INDIANAPOLIS TRANSIT SYSTEM BUS LINES is the fourth major department, printed on green paper.

V. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on green paper, is the fifth major department. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the designation of homes and places of business having telephones.

Municipal Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Indianapolis.

INDIANA SOLDIERS' AND SAILORS' MONUMENT

The Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument is in the center of Monument Circle, and was begun in 1887 and completed in 1901. The monument is an impressive column 2841/2 feet high. It is considered one of the world's most outstanding works of mon- umental architecture. Four epochs of Indiana history are commemorated by bronze statues of representative men: George Rogers Clark, the period of the Revolution; William Henry Harrison, the War of 1812 and the Battle of Tippecanoe; Governor James Whitcomb, the War with Mexico; and Governor Oliver P. Morton, the Civil War. This monument cost the people of Indiana $600,000. Its basement houses a museum, and an elevator carries visitors to an observation room at its top.
