RICHMOND CITY DIRECTORY.
PREFACE.
In presenting to the people of Richmond this new Directory for 1883-4, we wish to thank the business community for the generous support they have given us, and venture to hope that the work may meet their expectations:
In compiling this book, we have spared no effort to have it em- brace a full and complete list of all the inhabitants of the city above . the age of 15 years. Perfection can hardly be hoped for in any un- dertaking, and an absolutely correct Directory would, indeed, be a rare gem. We know that this work contains sixty pages more of names than the best of the two Directories issued here two years ago, and with the list of "Omissions, Corrections and Changes," which will be found on page 301, we believe it is as near perfect as it is possible to make such a work.
A new feature in this book is the insertion, in parenthesis, of the wife's name after that of each married man, which, we think, will be found a great convenience.
In conclusion, we wish especially to thank Postmaster Palmer and his efficient corps of assistants for valuable help in the compila- tion of this work.
Respectfully, THE PUBLISHERS.

RICHMOND CITY DIRECTORY.
POPULATION OF RICHMOND, 17,323.
In making the canvass for names for this Directory, every domicile within the city and suburbs was visited, and the num- ber of residents carefully noted and recorded. By this means we have secured a census of the inhabitants which we believe to be fully as correct as if taken officially. The result is a population in the city of 17,323-of which 1,558 are in the suburbs.
The population by the census of 1880 was 12,749 in the city proper. The present enumeration, therefore, shows a growth of 3,016 in three years - a showing which is fully borne out by the - large increase in new dwellings and other improvements, and which, if not quite up to the expectations of some, must be ac- knowledged to be quite satisfactory.
1
f" Consult the "Omissions, Corrections, and Changes," on pages 301 and 302. During the printing of the work a number of changes of residence have taken place.
