FARR'S CITY DIRECTORY.

The compiler of Farr's City Directory takes pride in presenting it to the people of South Bend as the most complete publication of the kind ever issued here The compiler has had years of experience in this city taking the enumeration for various official purposes, and is confident that no names have been omitted from this volume. The total number of names is, in round numbers, 6,000, which allowing 3} to a family would give South Bend a population of 21,000. It is safe to say that the population is 20,000. The usual allowance to a family is 4. That is the rule in Chicago and St. Louis, but that rule cannot apply to South Bend, as there are so many young men, and men who are living here without their families, working in the factories, who can represent only themselves in the enumeration. An exact enumeration of every man, woman and child will go above 19,000 and fall less than 100 short of 20,000.

The compiler has put a great deal of work on this his first Directory, and hopes that it will be so useful and reliable a volume that the one for 1884 will be eagerly looked for. If careful, conscientious work will make a directory reliable then this one should be. That has been the sole object of it rather than gain, for the compiler well knows that if his Directory becomes well established it will bring its deserved financial reward.

SOUTH BEND.

It will be a matter of pride to South Benders to see the steady and healthy growth of their city as shown by the names in this directory. They repre- sent a population of 20,000, or an average increase of 2,500 a year since the National Census of 1880. With growth in population there has been growth in area, growth in manufactures, growth in educational facilities, and in religion. Nearly a half dozen churches have been added since the census year, fully a score of factories, dwellings by the hundreds, and new school houses have been built or old ones enlarged to give the fullest bene- fits of the public schools to the children of South Bend. Notre Dame University, which is so near South Bend as to be almost a part and parcel of it, has greatly enlarged its facilities, as has St. Mary's Academy, the two leading Catholic educational institutions of the country, and these, with the new schools established inside the city limits, give South Bend a reputation for educational facilities that no other place in the state possesses. It has manufactories which are the largest of their kind in the world, railroad facilities second to no place of its size in the state, is surrounded by a rich agricultural country, has waterworks, gas, electric lights and other public improvements which larger cities have not-everything in fact to make it one of the largest cities in the state as it is already the largest manufactur- ing city.
